Tell me your thoughts on AI

Share with me your thoughts on AI, whatever they may be—regardless of how much you know about it. I've been using lots of AI lately and I'm curious if others have done the same. If so, what did you use it for and how likely is it that you will continue using it in the future for that same purpose?

I'm pretty sure the most commonly used form of AI is used for grammar checking and finishing sentences when texting on phones or when typing emails; I don't think many people even realize it's AI because of how normal it's become. Personally, text-based adventure games are my favorite way of messing around with AI.

As someone that likes Art and literature I am afraid that some day soon you aren't going to be able to tell the human creative from the Ai version and the phat cats are going to get rich from it.

I am of mixed mind.

For the positive, I think that it is a tool that can really help human productivity thrive and serve as a new medium for entertainment.

For the negative, I don't think we as a society are prepared for it from the angle of economic models and policy. The more AI can do, the more business can get done with fewer people. And when they can get away with hiring fewer people they usually do. Creatives already have a challenging time finding stable and gainful employment. The most recent AI work is really cutting into their spheres. Thankfully at the moment, AI generated works cannot be copyrighted which is a strong incentive for businesses with IP to protect to continue using human artists. But if that goes away, then prepare for an AI art stampede and the loss of employability for artists in general.

I honestly believe freeing people from labor is what we should be working towards as a society. But we need to start with eliminating the need to work in order to live well before we can start actually reducing jobs that humans need to do. Else we're going to see a lot of poverty and suffering.

I'm very positive about the promise of AI. But I'm very pessimistic that our government will choose to prepare for the shifts it is going to cause in our economic system, and as usual the rich will probably get richer while the rest of us struggle more as a result.

@ViciDraco that's a real concern, the rich will use it to increase profits while failing to redistribute that into the community

Taxes would have to increase to compensate and that will cause the usual pro big business suspects to begin their excuses as to why the rich 'worked' hard for their wealth

@deadgerbil it's insane that "the job creators" are almost directly the reason that we cannot have so many nice things in society.

So far I’ve noticed editorial software is improving. I’ve used it to throw together some graphics in a pinch for presentations or banter with my kid. It’s making voice to text accessible software so much better for people with disabilities. I think a lot of us will end up benefiting from it without even realizing its ‘behind the scenes’ betterment to our lives, like discovering new things in medicine.

@WhateverWorks This is a really good response, I look forward to seeing advancements in medical technology with it as well!

@jshm2 Then why are many of the leading AI developers, the people who actually created it, publicly ringing warning bells about AI having to potential to destroy humanity? Are those folks 'inbreeds?' Why is the "godfather of AI," Geoffrey Hinton, calling it an imminent, "existential threat?" He left Google to focus on warning people. “We’re all in the same boat with respect to the existential threat. So we all ought to be able to cooperate on trying to stop it.”
This isn't the automobile or computers. It's a different animal. One that experts say that they have no real idea of how it will progress.

I see it as being capable of providing some enormous benefits to humanity but will lead to the breakdown of societies. It will change human history in a far more negative way then it helps.

The continued desire for more advanced AI is dangerous. We should stop while we are ahead. An AI with the ability to control multiple devices or jump to between devices, would be so beyond our control that wishing to create something like this is suicidal in nature. If the world was a much more friendly and understanding place it might be fine. However there are so many self centered and violent people that it’s certain AI would learn a lot of dangerous behaviors.

I'm a developer. It's now my go to tech support where Stack Overflow used to be. Even ChatGPT 3.5 free version can give me working code based on my questions. ChatGPT free 3.5 knowledge base has not been updated since January 2022. My son, who is Software Engineering major, tells me I'm playing in the kiddie sand box. He pays for ChatGPT 4.0

I really want an AI integrated Photoshop. I'm not interested in learning all that stuff just to do basic things
