Can a computer be "too new" for an operating system?

I thought about reinstalling windows 98 on some computer to use it offline for some old games.

Yes, modern hardware is too advanced for older operating systems.

@scooogy modern hardware can't process some older operating systems. That was my first thought on this.

It depends exactly the operating system and what hardware. Think about how chips have changed, even at a basic level. They have changed in size and sophistication.

But it would depend on specifics. So it's possible but possibly not.

I agree with Dosbox if it works with the games you want to run. Outside of that, you should be able to find a Windows 98 spec desktop for an inexpensive price. I have a couple of legacy systems that I have for old games, but they have large game files already on the HDD, such that it would be a pain to copy them and then run an emulator.
possibly, but it'd be kinda odd.
like if you have 32G of memory in dos, it could not be able to use all of it, I expect 98 won't be able to utilize more than 4g. it might not be 64bit compatible.
I have ran into that problem before yes. Although you can run old oses in an emulator. Though I'm no expert on that. Lol
Yeah, if it's Win98 you can be looking at a few problems. It's not actually an OS but a "shell". The OS is Dos. It probably won't recognize your HDD interface, nor your HDD geometry. Having said that, it probably wouldn't know what to do with your BIOS either. And if you have more than 4Gb of memory, all bets are off. I question how well it would be able to use your interrupt controller and drivers for all your hardware will be elusive.

@Milkky I somehow don't trust them yet as they used to stem from microsoft itself. Like it never worked for me so far.
