Can a computer be "too new" for an operating system?

I thought about reinstalling windows 98 on some computer to use it offline for some old games.

Yeah, if it's Win98 you can be looking at a few problems. It's not actually an OS but a "shell". The OS is Dos. It probably won't recognize your HDD interface, nor your HDD geometry. Having said that, it probably wouldn't know what to do with your BIOS either. And if you have more than 4Gb of memory, all bets are off. I question how well it would be able to use your interrupt controller and drivers for [i]all[/i] your hardware will be elusive.
