Girls slippered or caned in trousers

After about 1976, trousers for girls were allowed at most UK schools, but that also increased the incidence of them getting caned over trousers. The rationale was that if they could now wear trousers like the boys, they could be caned like the boys, too!

Girls should wear skirts to school.

Never in school. We got a "note of poor conduct", to be taken home, and signed by a parent. Everybody was fully aware of what that implied.

Certainly not me - well, I am male!

CP was a rare last resort in my schools, and though I knew of three or four boys who had the cane from the Headmaster, in my seven senior-school years, I knew of no girls being caned or slippered.

That would have been by the female Deputy Head anyway but I never heard of any instances or the possibility, despite the usual news-channel, the playground samizdat.

Girls in 6th form were allowed to wear trousers at my school and were often slippered or, less often, caned in them. Both my sisters were slippered and caned in trousers at school, my older sister the most. A few times, my sisters and I were dealt with together. My wife was also slippered and caned in trousers at her school.

We had the slipper but more of a plimsoll
