Do you remember the apparatus in PE ?

Rhode5756-60, M
Yes climbing ropes, the horse , gym mats , mini tramps , parralell bars , uneven bars , climbing bars , balance beam , I think the only thing we didnt have was a large trampoline .

@Rhode57 Oh no I'm sorry to hear.
Rhode5756-60, M
@Ross19 Its life I live day to day now just got to make the best of it .
Ross1931-35, M
@Rhode57 Yes indeed

At primary school we had two sets of climbing bars that could be folded flat against the wall when not in use (we did PE in the assembly hall), four ropes that hung from the ceiling and a load of green mats. At boarding school we had a dedicated room for gymnastics with lots of equipment, a separate sports hall for team games, and two dance studios. Lots and lots of blue PE mats. Sometimes the smaller girls got wrapped up in the mats and rolled around on the gym floor 馃檮

@SunshineGirl At primary school we had one hall that was used for everything and had these apparatus sets tied up against the wall but for one lesson a year we were able to climb all over them. In high school we had two dedicated gymnasiums with all the equipment in and two sports halls. We never wrapped up anyone in gym mats though. I remember stacking them in the store room after PE and feeling the storeroom dust under my bare feet.

@Ross19 My nieces have bars like those in the photo in their primary school. They look fun 馃檪
Ross1931-35, M
@SunshineGirl They do indeed. Mine was and the class erupted in sheer joy when we were told it was an apparatus lesson.

Yes, my senior school ( an LEA mixed grammar), had two well-equipped gymnasia and extensive sports fields.

My primary school did not have such facilities, but we made do with ropes, balls, hoops and the like. It had a small field next to the playground, but for larger football games we traipsed once a week to a public playing-fields about half a mile away. There were no changing facilities there so we used a ragged hawthorn hedge as shelter, until the neighbouring secondary school built a large shed for us in the corner of its own sports-field.

I can remember a horse that was taller than me. I had no chance of jumping it. Some wooden benches that we used to balance on. Rubber mats that were falling apart. Skipping ropes. Rubber hoops for juggling with.

Wall bars, climbing ropes, benches for balancing on, a gym horse, blue mats for floor exercises.
Ross1931-35, M
@lizzielost i remember the benches hardly ever ysed for actually sitting on but for various sports.
lizzielostF
@Ross19 Yes, that was quite strange. We used them like a beam for gymnastics or a goal for hockey. You could also hook them onto wall bars and create a slope for climbing up in bare feet
Ross1931-35, M
@lizzielost Yeah we did all of those and played bench ball where you stood and jumped on the bench or similar. For us all PE was done in bare feet
DragonFruit61-69, M
We had a gym with gym equipment and basketball hoops.
DeWayfarer61-69, M
We called them monkey bars in grade school here in the USA. 馃榿
smileylovesgaming31-35, F
We had nothing like that back then
hippyjoe195561-69, M
Some schools had them. Ours didn't.

It鈥檚 called physical education, was there any education or just a failed wannabe athlete telling you to get on with it?
Ross1931-35, M
@meJess Haha 馃槃 probably a failed wannabe athlete but on days when the apparatus came put it was fun to climb on
ArishMell70-79, M
@meJess I think our PE teachers were genuinely that - Physical Education teachers.

A PM correspondent on here gives me the impression that in American school sports the emphasis is on winning trophies and glory (well, all right, in his locality anyway); whereas in the UK, in my and most of my friends' experiences the aim was physical and mental agility and stamina. The competitive element in some games and athletics was there, but for encouragement on the day only.

So a lot more than just "Here's the gym - get on with it". We were taught how to perform the gymnastics, athletics and games - to the best of our abilities, which were low in me!

One day our PE teacher introduced us to 5-a-side football. He told us he had made the goals, in the school woodwork shop, though during the Summer Holiday; adding that his second teaching subject was wood-work!
RaceFan8831-35, M
Nope, in the US we don鈥檛 have those but it looks like fun
Ross1931-35, M
@RaceFan88 aww you definitely missed out!
RaceFan8831-35, M
@Ross19 In elementary school, we did have a rock wall installed when I was in 5th grade I believe. That was fun when we got to climb it
ravenhillM
nope unfortunately not.
