went to a Catholic High School
until Nov 1st and after April 30th we could wear a short sleeved blouse. all buttons had to be buttoned
long sleeve in winter again all buttons buttoned and sleeves could not be rolled up
dresses no more than 1" above the knee with knee high socks
panty hose were not allowed as that was considered underwear and not allowed to be seen
shoes had to be purchased from a local dept store which were approved by the school
God forbid anyone wore makeup

@saragoodtimes Oh no that sounds horrible

@saragoodtimes I think these rules are what make us vibrant, differentiate between right and wrong and at the same time help us being ethical.
InstructHer · 56-60, M
@saragoodtimes sounds like many school uniforms here.

I went to a very crowded school so this kinda made sense, but we weren't allowed to carry our backpacks in the hallways except when entering and leaving the school. When school started, we had to go straight to our lockers and take our binders to class.

hem 4 fingers above the knee when sitting on the knees
no make up
if you were seen on weekdays in town you had to wear your school uniform and your socks better be pulled up and you had to wear a tie and blazer , and better be on your best behaviour -you are were representing the school
very short fingernails
hair tied out of the eyes tucked in behind the ears
if they were just long enough they had to be tied up no matter what no loose hanging hair
walking in lines , standing in lines
never run in hallways
there were senior areas and junior areas at the schoolgrounds and you better not be caught somewhere you should not be

when in the assembly hall we wither had to wear indoor shoes or go in there in socks...i was mostly in my socks...
AtlanticAlice · 41-45, F
@Ross19 thing was some days in assembly half the school was in socks and the teachers moaned about all the shoes left outside the hall...go figure...
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@AtlanticAlice Haha the idiots 🤣 although if the hall was one of those varnished wooden floors I kind of understand I suppose
AtlanticAlice · 41-45, F
@Ross19 it was and there were a couple of carpeted areas in the school (library & media room) where out door shoes weren't allowed either
ChildOfNature · 26-30, F
Fortunately in our school we didn't have a rule for wearing indoor shoes or any other dress regulations. So I could also just walk barefoot inside the school building. However, sometimes I got in trouble for my dirty feet, because I walked barefoot around everywhere outside as well. 😶
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@ChildOfNature that's so great! To get to be barefoot in school I had to pretend that I didn't have inside shoes and deliberately wear non uniform socks so I'd be told to take them off.

The hair bows we wore had to be white, or dark blue.
The skirt longer below the knee..
No makeup or color on nails.
Had to use the school backpack.
I didn't mind those rules but were silly.

Uniform for the boys but not us girls.
Our rules were :
Skirts no shorter than just above the knee.
No cropped tops
Sensible shoes.
Jewelry limited to ear rings.
No makeup
No gum chewing.
But the rules only got enforced for the boys.
I broke all these rules.Wore cropped tops, halter tops, miniskirts, shorts, sandals, heels, went barefoot everywhere in warm weather, chewed gum all the time, blowing bubbles and popping it super loud.Wore makeup.

That's normal I guess. Except having to walk around in socks.
We were not allowed to leave anything in our lockers during the summer break. I hated when we received books for another school year that I already knew we wouldn't be using and I had to drag them all home. All at once of course because the day we received them was also the day our lockers had to be emptied.

@CrazyMusicLover Yeah the socks part is a little weird I suppose. Yeah we had to clear our lockers for summer break too which meant carrying hone all the crap I'd accumulated over the school year 😅
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
We had to eat lunch at our desks without getting out of the desk or talking to our friends. After that was over we had to go outside to play no matter the weather. -40 was a great time to play on the snow bank or go outdoor skating.
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@hippyjoe1955 No talking at lunch! Seems a bit cruel.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Ross19 would have been impossible for me! 😂
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Ross19 There were all kinds of silly rules. I got the strap twice on each hand for throwing snowballs. Throwing snowballs was against the rules you see. As a boy I had to take my hat off at the door. As girls my sisters could wear their hats throughout the school. As a boy I could wear pants to keep warm in the winter. As girls my sisters had to wear skirts or dresses.

no letters printed on your shirts
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
“No spaghetti straps ya whores!”
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Skirt hemlines could not be above knee height. If they were (or you'd had a growth spurt over the weekend) you had to get changed into PE shorts/gym knickers, which of course were above knee height . . 🙄
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@SunshineGirl Now that does seem rather ridiculous considering most gym skirts would probably be shorter than the non regulation uniform skirt!
lizzielost · F
We had to take our shoes off before going into the school hall
Skirts no more than one inch above the knee

@lizzielost How times have changed
trackboy · 22-25, M
@lizzielost now boys have make-up on them too. some boys do a better job with the makeup than the girls do and I bet that pisses the girls off big time!🍪
TurtlePink · 22-25, F
We were not allowed to take our backpacks into the cafeteria we actually had to line them up in the lobby outside of the cafeteria 😂😅
trackboy · 22-25, M
@TurtlePink @TurtlePink did you make the teachers pay for your back pack when the other students stole your back pack since it was left untended??
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
I didn't have any lockers until I got to high school. But it was easier to put all your extra work books and carry what you needed in your bookbag in high school. Elementary/jr. high was different. You had to carry your books with you while your bookbag stayed in home room. Another stupid rule from elementary school was we couldn't play on the field so the grass would grow. I went to a Catholic school and least from my point of view, strict discipline triumphed over everything, even education. I liked the fact that in high school, we could wear sneakers in class.
GentleLucille · 26-30, F
Had to carry around plimsolls in our PE bags even though we did all indoor PE in bare feet 🙄
Ross19 · 31-35, M
@GentleLucille thats just ridiculous 🙄
saragoodtimes · F
our skirts couldn't be more than 1 inch above the knee and tights weren't allowed. a lady never shows her underwear

Rules.. in Italian public schools? 😅
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
Nah they were fairly normal, compared to how strict rules are these days
