What Is Praying In The Spirit?

This is a subject that's been debated in the church for a while now. I didn't understand it myself till I saw it written in the Bible. Some say it's deep prayer while some say it's speaking in other tongues. This is what the Bible says.

[c=7700B2]1 Corinthians 14:15 (KJV) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.[/c]

The Bible says praying in the spirit is praying in other tongues.

I belong to a big pentecostal church, often hear people praying in tongues. It's a beautiful thing to hear. ❤️
@Thandeka You obviously didn't read my reply. I said I did not say it was selfish. This is a great gift to have.

@LadyGrace Oh sorry 😊. I read your response I must have missed the not. My bad.
@Thandeka that's okay. No problem. That's easy to do.
When we are saved, we are filled with the Holy Spirit and He is always present with us, so when we pray, we can say we are praying in the Spirit in that way. The Bible even says that the Holy Spirit sometimes intercedes for us when we don't know what to pray so he is always present when we pray and, when we are saved. The Bible also says that not all shall have the gift of speaking in tongues but that doesn't mean a person is not saved if they don't. It just means they have been given a different gift or gifts by the Holy Spirit.
How did your speaking in tongues come about?
Thandeka · 31-35, F
@LadyGrace I agree it's unbiblical for people to teach others to speak in tongues. It's not for the people to teach but for the Holy Spirit. The only thing people can do is teach others on the subject.

I was having this conversation with a lady from church just a few days ago. She was telling me that her daughter who goes to another church said her church members corrected her in the way she spoke in tongues. I told her plainly that it's unscriptural. I told her she should study her Bible so as not to be swayed to and fro by religiousity.
@Thandeka Amen sister. So true. God bless you in your journey.

Praise and worship I feel is when we are active in the spirit…

@Thandeka every time you pray your spirit prays... but you can pray from earth or your spirit can go to heaven and speak..
Thandeka · 31-35, F
@israelwins That's not what scripture says. It says when you pray in tongues your spirit prays.

@Thandeka That's not what scripture says. It says when you pray in tongues your spirit prays 1 Corinthians 14:14.

What is the surrounding context of the scripture you gave? How about, speaking in tongues is pointless without a translator? Any footnotes, cross references? Will speaking in tongues, prophecy, healing end? If so, when?

Might help to compare translations, if you haven't already. Use the url below.

@BibleData 1 Corinthians 14 mainly talks about speaking in tongues. Speaking in tongues is only pointless when you're around other believers because only you benefit from it. Jude 1:20 tells us it edifies when you speak in other tongues. The apostle Paul does advice us to pray that we may interpret so the church may benefit.

@BibleData denends if there are two spirits next to each other they can communicate together from the vessels ,, depends on the topic

But everyone heard the Apostles in their own language

Would go back and tell me where you find the word "In" in the Bible passage you quoted. I see the word "WITH" but not the word "IN". Also I don't see where you get the idea that praying with or in the Spirit means praying in tongues.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Thandeka That wasn't in the passage you posted. That completely aside since when does praying in the Spirit mean speaking in tongues? Did you notice the word IF in that? If does not mean DO. It is a conditional word If/else is a logic statement in computer lingo. Can you explain ! Corinthians 14:22? I can. Can you? Oh and what did Jesus say in Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not babble as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.
Thandeka · 31-35, F
@hippyjoe1955 I was hoping you'd go study the chapter because that chapter settled it for me. I was once confused about it too but it was clear in that chapter.

What has babbling have to do with speaking in tongues? Jesus himself said this will be the sign that'll follow the believers.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

If you deny that he meant speaking with new tongues means speaking in tongues then you're choosing to be ignorant and there's nothing I can do.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Thandeka Believe it or not praying in tongues and speaking new languages are not the same thing. Go back in the Bible and find all the places where speaking in tongues happened. What was the result?
israelwins · 61-69, M
to pray means to speak to.....all you have to do is think it and jesus hears you..
israelwins · 61-69, M
@Thandeka YOU DONT HAVE TO BOW YOUR HEAD TO ASK JUST TALK AS YOU ARE SPEAKING TO A FRIEND..
Thandeka · 31-35, F
@israelwins True that. You can bow your head if you're feeling up to it.
