What Is Praying In The Spirit?

This is a subject that's been debated in the church for a while now. I didn't understand it myself till I saw it written in the Bible. Some say it's deep prayer while some say it's speaking in other tongues. This is what the Bible says.

[c=7700B2]1 Corinthians 14:15 (KJV) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.[/c]

The Bible says praying in the spirit is praying in other tongues.

Would go back and tell me where you find the word "In" in the Bible passage you quoted. I see the word "WITH" but not the word "IN". Also I don't see where you get the idea that praying with or in the Spirit means praying in tongues.

@hippyjoe1955 Ephesians 6:18 (KJV) Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

1 Corinthians 14 talks about praying in the spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful.

This verse reveals that praying in the spirit is when you can't understand the words you're saying because you're speaking mysterious of God unless of course you have the gift of interpretation. It's what happened in the Book of Acts when the Holy Spirit fell upon them. They were speaking in an unknown tongue and people thought they were drunk. There's nowhere in the Bible where it refers to praying in the spirit with understanding. Well if I missed it please show me the verse.

@Thandeka That wasn't in the passage you posted. That completely aside since when does praying in the Spirit mean speaking in tongues? Did you notice the word IF in that? If does not mean DO. It is a conditional word If/else is a logic statement in computer lingo. Can you explain ! Corinthians 14:22? I can. Can you? Oh and what did Jesus say in Matthew 6:7 And when you pray, do not babble as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

@hippyjoe1955 I was hoping you'd go study the chapter because that chapter settled it for me. I was once confused about it too but it was clear in that chapter.

What has babbling have to do with speaking in tongues? Jesus himself said this will be the sign that'll follow the believers.

Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

If you deny that he meant speaking with new tongues means speaking in tongues then you're choosing to be ignorant and there's nothing I can do.

@Thandeka Believe it or not praying in tongues and speaking new languages are not the same thing. Go back in the Bible and find all the places where speaking in tongues happened. What was the result?
