What Is Praying In The Spirit?

This is a subject that's been debated in the church for a while now. I didn't understand it myself till I saw it written in the Bible. Some say it's deep prayer while some say it's speaking in other tongues. This is what the Bible says.

[c=7700B2]1 Corinthians 14:15 (KJV) What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.[/c]

The Bible says praying in the spirit is praying in other tongues.

I belong to a big pentecostal church, often hear people praying in tongues. It's a beautiful thing to hear. 鉂わ笍

@Patientlywaiting I thought it was weird when I first heard people do it in my teens. It's an awesome experience because something always happens inside of me especially when I do it longer.

@Thandeka it's not a gift I've ever been given but I know what you mean, the room is always alive with the power of the holy spirit. 鉂わ笍馃檹鉂わ笍

@Patientlywaiting I'm sure you could ask for it. The Bible says that God has given us all things that pertain to life and godliness through the knowledge of him. Jesus told us to ask for anything in his name didn't he. There's no limits to what God can give you.

@Thandeka I ask for his guidance and that he fills me with what he feels I need. 馃槉

@Patientlywaiting That too is good. But scripture says all things are yours. I want to enjoy all that he's given me not only in the next life but here also 馃槃

@Thandeka The Bible says that we don't get to pick out our spiritual gifts. That is done by the Holy Spirit alone. Yet I'm sure we can ask for a spiritual gift, but that doesn't always mean we'll get what we ask for. The spirit gives us gifts, according to what He thinks we need.
LadyGrace
@Thandeka Just because the Bible says all things are yours, doesn't mean every single thing. The Bible also said that God gives us our needs, not our wants, which are asked in a selfish manner. I know a lot of people that speak in tongues that look down on others because they don't and that's wrong, even in some churches. I have also seen nothing but people speaking in tongues who only utter two or three words they have memorized as well, and that's not speaking in tongues. We are also to have an interpreter there if we speak in tongues.

@LadyGrace Speaking in tongues is not a selfish thing to ask. It's a spiritual gift. God wouldn't withhold that from us if we asked. Speaking in tongues doesn't mean you've fully matured in the spirit. It just means you're at a point in your spiritual growth where you're letting the Holy Spirit reveal divine mysteries to you in an unknown tongue. That doesn't mean there's anything wrong with you if you don't speak in tongues. You can speak in tongues in the privacy of your own home and interpret it if you have the gift but if you're in a church gathering then it'll be important for someone to interpret if someone starts speaking tongues.
LadyGrace
@Thandeka No, it's not a selfish thing to ask and I didn't say that if you read my words. Not at all. How did you receive speaking in tongues?
Thandeka31-35, F
@LadyGrace How's it selfish if it's going to edify me as scripture says? It was months after rededicating my life to Christ and was I praising God for healing me from depression something I'd suffered for more than a decade. Power fell upon me and I started speaking in tongues. I just knew it was God 馃槃.
LadyGrace
@Thandeka You obviously didn't read my reply. I said I did not say it was selfish. This is a great gift to have.
Thandeka31-35, F
@LadyGrace Oh sorry 馃槉. I read your response I must have missed the not. My bad.
LadyGrace
@Thandeka that's okay. No problem. That's easy to do.
