The purpose of Religion

can we say religion is a form of spirituality or philosophy

That seems a fair description yes.

It is fine if a sincere belief developed by its holder, but not if enforced.

I am not particularly religious at all but from a nominally Anglican background, and do have friends in the Church.

I never thought of Christianity as control. I do not come from a Christian background. I see it more in terms of belief and commitment. It will chance your life when you allow Jesus to enter you.

@peterlee I agree: religion itself - not only Christianity as you have chosen - is not for "control" but should be a personal matter.

Sadly it too often and too easily abused and misused for control by mere bullies.

“[R]eligion was the race's first (and worst) attempt to make sense of reality. It was the best the species could do at a time when we had no concept of physics, chemistry, biology or medicine. We did not know that we lived on a round planet, let alone that the said planet was in orbit in a minor and obscure solar system, which was also on the edge of an unimaginably vast cosmos that was exploding away from its original source of energy. We did not know that micro-organisms were so powerful and lived in our digestive systems in order to enable us to live, as well as mounting lethal attacks on us as parasites. We did not know of our close kinship with other animals. We believed that sprites, imps, demons, and djinns were hovering in the air about us. We imagined that thunder and lightning were portentous. It has taken us a long time to shrug off this heavy coat of ignorance and fear, and every time we do there are self-interested forces who want to compel us to put it back on again.”

@BlueSkyKing I would not take much notice of someone who got a third from Oxford.

I would say it is a way of teaching morality to both young and old. If you are part of a religious community, you will learn their prevailing morality. In this way, civilizations have grown from barbarism to social order.

A means of control
PatKirby · M
It was at one time in the past. It's modern implementation has morphed into a multi-variate form of control.

Neither. It’s for controlling the herd and steering to where you want them to go.

@Nick1 What do you have when you have 2 Baptists in a pew? A fight. If you think Christianity is some sort of mind or crowd control you have never been involved in any church including the Catholic one where even the Pope is getting yelled at for the changes he is making.
@Nick1 nevermind that you'll never find a serious anthropologist to agree to that
