A Roman temple discovered under Leicester cathedral. Pretty cool.

Also confirms the belief that most of the Christian sites in Europe are appropriated pagan sites. People could have been singing and praying in these spaces for even longer than recorded history would have us believe.

My history teacher in primary school taught us that. It makes total sense because it supported a smoother transition from one faith to the other. People would not just let go of their old temples and start worshipping in new ones. Even the Parthenon at one point was a Christian church. Archaeology is so fascinating.
Good subject for a Time Team documentary....

This is brilliant. Nice post.

I expect lots of things we do has deep roots. People tossing coins into a well and making a wish is no different to people sacrificing small valuable objects into rivers asking for a safe crossing. This stuff is an adventure waiting to happen.

@Ceinwyn That’s a cool way of looking at it.

Yup, Christianity absorbed a lot of stuff from pagans and made it their own

@jshm2 It’s obvious that neither christians or Normans are native to the British isles. The days of the week are still named after Saxon gods. We touch wood to avoid bad luck. We dance around May poles. We decorate trees and give gifts at Yule. Christianity is Hebrew religion unwittingly spread by Romans. It’s just one ripple in a wave of gods brought here by various people. And it’s still happening today.

Makes sense, Iona, one of the birthplaces of Christianity in Scotland, was sacred before St Columba made it his headquarters. No doubt other sites are the same.
