Leaving a toxic relationship? Chime in.

JohnnyNoir · 56-60, M
It takes time for the toxicity to fully clear
I did. Years ago. Best decision ever.

The journey of a thousand kilometers starts with a single step

If you're leaving one, that's probably good for you. I find giving myself a good amount of de-stressing time daily is important to think somewhat clearly. Keep some friendships going if possible and things to do with them.

I left one in mid 2018 - due to domestic violence, bullying and abuse directed at me (and at our then less than 1 y/o daughter) and it was the best move I've ever made since I removed the trigger (my presence) to protect my daughter from it escalating further.

I'd rather be single forever in preference to going into toxic relationships now I've been very badly burnt. That last one was super-toxic and a woman I dated since (in 2020) also turned out to be really toxic.

I didn't technically leave, I was dumped and at the time I didn't know it was in my best interest. It was a hard lesson but it taught me self worth. It taught me never to let a woman have control, never to let my feelings for a girl take away my independence and confidence. I felt like nothing when she left, felt worthless and shattered. Looking back I'm glad it ended, because its not what I needed. It wasnt healthy

Yeah, hard when they are persistent and manipulative.

that's a good thing
It may hurt to begin with. You may question yourself and it may leave you looking for them, but remember if it was toxic and any attempts to heal the toxicity came to nothing.... then you are saying riddance to what and who is hurting you.

Luckily I've never had to. But I would feel that you must for yourself and those around you that care about you.
