Quick tip for anyone who is trying out online dating sites

Don't start your conversation with a compliment. Or a simple "hi", "sup", "what are you doing". Or asking the other for pics/their snapchat/etc.

You'd think people would be better at making people interested in talking to them than that

i dont do dating sites.. they are just full of immature people who just want to fuck and run or married people looking for something outside of their marriage..
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@SW-User Oh... I thought going to a social gathering or to church or the cafeteria or hanging out with friends of friends was a better way to pick out a mate.
SW-User
@JollyRoger no datign sites were suppose to let you meet people that you normally wouldnt have.. not to become some sex hook up sites.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@SW-User Yes, but you don't actually 'meet' them, do you! So...getting back to NorthernRoses' opener: You don't get to 'see' that person, so you have to ask them about their self, like: "I mentioned in my profile that I like doing...whatever... does that interest you too?" Bottom line: If the person IS truly looking for a relationship, then they will be looking to meet you sooner than later, so picking some common interest as the basis for a date would be the logical follow-through, wouldn't it?
I usually open with American Psycho quotes.

@iHaveNoIdeaWhatImDoing Yes, a “I like to dissect girls. Did you know I'm utterly insane?” would probably do it BOOM congrats you're a chick magnet
@NorthernRoses Well wait a minute now. I like to start with talking about Huey Lewis and the News. Dissection is like a second or third date thing.
@NorthernRoses gosh you're funny asf!!!
Fernie · F
better yet...don't go near dating sites
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@Fernie Pff I guess, but I've met some really great people on dating sites so not giving up that shit just yet. More people to talk to, more friends to make out there 💕
chrisCA · M
@Fernie For some, it is a good way to meet new people.
chrisCA · M
@NorthernRoses I had good luck with them. I met my girlfriend on POF.
SW-User
Good advice. It's like starting out a CV with "Purpose: I need a job."
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@SW-User Exactly!!
NCCindy · 36-40, F
Back when I was single ... it used to amaze me at how lame some initial contacts were from guys on dating sites.

Basically, if you didn't get me interested in your first contact, you probably will get ignored.
chrisCA · M
@NCCindy Women get so many messages from guys. You have to stand out in the that first contact, or get lost in the deluge.
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
From someone who struggled with this for years, I get it, you start to feel frustrated and you stop putting in the effort to be appealing.

But yes of course you're exactly right, it's either obvious right off the bat that you're not putting in any effort ('hey') or that you're trying too hard, indicating desperation ('I've just read every one of your stories, I love your style! you're amazing!'). It's difficult to introduce yourself without going down either of these avenues, or sounding like you're bragging.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@CheshireCatalyst The "desperation" route is waaay preferable. At least that shows that they've read your profile.

The ones I actually answer are typically the ones who have very obviously read something on my profile, and find something to talk/discuss about from there.
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
@NorthernRoses Put yourself in the shoes, though, of a guy who has done that fifty times, but gets no responses because he's just a drop in the ocean of guys doing exactly the same thing. It feels humiliating after a while to be ignored. It's hard to stand out.
Socialclutz · 36-40, M
What's the best way to initiate a conversation with you then?
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@Socialclutz Reading my profile and starting an actual conversation about something we're both interested in, instead of the "hi sweetie, you're so beautiful!! What's your snapchat?? 😚" BS I get on OKCupid all the time.
I'd rather get to know someone first, what their like
chrisCA · M
Or call them babe, dear, honey, etc.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@chrisCA Ugh yeah, that's the worst!! I instantly delete messages that are just "hi sweetie", "hey babe", etc.
I feel like they're doing it like "wow I'm so suave and I obviously have an interest in you" thing but it just feels so damn condescending 🙄
SW-User
@NorthernRoses sounds presumptuous to me..I don't want a stranger calling me baby..I'm not your baby, dickbag.
iMystery · M
"Hi I noticed your profile mentioning you have an interest in *Something shes interested in*. I may not know much about the subject, but I would really like for you to tell me more about that, if you mind sharing that is.

Will patiently await your reply"

.... How does that work for you? 🤔
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@iMystery It's a bit too... formal? But otherwise it's fine.
iMystery · M
@NorthernRoses The idea is to spark a conversation about what SHE is interested in and giving the vibe that you are sincerely interested in learning about what she has to say... this is to break the ice and establish a sort of "common" ground.

R5000 · 41-45, M
Hey - so whats you bra size?
SW-User
a cheesy joke..anything is better than "hi"
SW-User
I honestly think most of them are males, faking to be female.
NorthernRoses · 22-25, F
@SW-User That's awfully paranoid.
SW-User
