Is it weird if your spouse isn't your best friend?

SkeetSkeet · 100+, F
My hubby and I are best friends, and started out that way 35 years ago. We've had our fair share of breaks and serious problems but we've managed to get through them by learning to improve our communication.

I think if your spouse is your best friend then your marriage has a good chance of surviving till natural death.

But weird?
Yes, it is - in the sense of not normal.
Since 2 out of 3 marriages end in divorce, it's fair to say that failure is the norm.

@hartfire I don't feel the need to start off as friends, and quite frankly I don't really have the patience for it lol.
@WendyLopez43 Hmm.
Fair enough.
We create whatever we most need.

@hartfire I did try dating a friend in highschool who I had known since elementary but the problem is I didn't feel we had chemistry as a romantic couple. Not that I didn't try to feel that spark but I just didn't.

I think it would be weird if your spouse wasn't one of your best friends.

In my mind, possibly the majority of best friends are of the same sex as yourself.

But I would think that your spouse should be your best friend of their sex.

I am speaking from my bias of heterosexual relationships.

I'd be interested in what people in a same sex relationship think.

I'd hate that honestly

It would be for me. I want a shared life, to know and known fully is the greatest opportunity to be loved completely.
But people are different, that's fine.

I don't think it's so weird. I think your best friend is who knows all your secrets, not necessarily who you married.

No, not at all. At the same time, I believe you can have more than one best friend, including your spouse.

I guess. But I’m not sure. I don’t have a best friend. But my wife may be that best friend.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
I think that's rather common, especially for women.
thedesi123 · 51-55, C
No, it is that way sometimes.
Snuffy1957 · 61-69, M
Probably but I'm used to it by now...
It's traditional.

You can have a spouse and a best friend. I think you should be very close with your spouse though
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@NinaTina I was never really one to wanna be in a relationship with a friend because I was afraid it would ruin our friendship if things didn't work out.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@WendyLopez43 if there's unrequited love by one party, the friendship is ruined anyway. Why not give a shot?
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 I did date a friend once who I had known since elementary school but it turned out we didn't have much chemistry as a couple. Dating friends seemed less appealing to me after that.
empanadas · 31-35, M
Kind of, y'all should be close
WendyLopez43 · 26-30, F
@empanadas I don't like the idea of being in a relationship with my best friend
