We have lots here where I live. I love them.
People are also setting up free little food tables on their lawns as well

There’s one around the corner and I gave some books to the boy so he could put them there. I haven’t stopped and looked for books…he said there’s mostly kid’s books and I don’t know if anyone is taking them. I still have some I could donate if it starts to empty out.

Often but they don't go under to that name. They vary in size from a box holding half a dozen books to a lobby in a shopping centre with a hundred shelf metres of books.

Yes, they became very popular during the pandemic. Great way of circulating childrens books and toys in particular.
In the UK they are often set up in redundant phone boxes.

Yes. I have gotten a few mystery novels that way. I have dropped off a variety of books.

Better than trying to sell books. I add more than I take. Keep them wholesome by purging church pamphlets.

No, I have not.

I have never seen one in all my travels in this area.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou they are dotted all around this city.

@cherokeepatti SO lucky! I am rediscovering my local BIG library. I need lots of reading material while I sit in waiting rooms, taking friends to their doctor's appointments!

@4meAndyou I think they started out putting them near schools on this side of the city so children could get some reading material..before the east-side (very small though) library was built. Then they started having different people put them in their yards too.
In the area of town where I currently live they'd get stolen.

@NativePortlander1970 Sounds like a win all round - the sofa is reused rather than being sent to landfill, municipality is spared the expense of disposal -although it would have been courteous to have asked you first.
@SunshineGirl There's a common mentality in the US, once it hits the curb it's garbage, therefore free to take, it's a headache for people that are moving in or out of homes, thieves use that mentality to steal, despite the presence of moving vans or trucks, they even go inside the vehicles to get what they want.

@NativePortlander1970 There was a burglary ring that hit one residential area and I don’t know how many homes here about 14 years ago. They would bring a moving truck and break in and clean the houses out while the residents were at work… furniture, electronics, furnishings, jewelry, gun, tools, patio furniture, grills, etc. The neighbors would watch and say they didn’t know they were moving. Would find out it was a burglary after their neighbors came home. I heard this at a yard sale with the people talking about it. Now so many have security cams and can check on their homes while they are at work or on vacation.
