I seem to have lost my reading mojo

Lately I am finding it hard to pick up a book. It's not that the one's I'm reading aren't interesting. I just seem to go through long periods where I just don't read. Does anyone else have this problem? What do you do to start reading again?

I have a similar problem. It seems I have so many other things to do, that reading takes a back seat and I find it difficult to motivate myself to start on anything. It can be overwhelming, there's so many other things to do with my time. I make a point of at least reading in bed. I go to bed a half hour early, just to dedicate the time to reading. Sometimes I read for that half hour, sometimes I'll continue for an hour, it depends how tired I am. It's not much time, but it's a start, and if I get into the book, then I find time to continue read it, as I'm encouraged then to keep turning the pages to finish it.

@Richard65 that's a good idea.
As a former Stoic, I condition myself to habit. I force myself into a timed condition response, reinforcing it. My brain does give out, if I focus too much on narrative reading I'll cycle as needed to a ES function like talking (which I am doing now). I hand copy books in whole, if I notice my script is going wonky or I am no longer grasping the text and am just powering through with it without comprehension, I will stop and reread it, and relax my mind and daydream a bit.

Sometimes this is all overwhelming or undesirable so I will turn peripatetic and go for a walk to let my mind roam free.

I also listen to instrumental music at 420 hz. Usually something like cello, contrabass, duduk- no voices or words.

And whatever you do, do not surround yourself with knick-knacks, stuffed animals and pottery in a she-shed in the backyard with scented candles burning and a wicker bowl of yarn by your side as Maia Angelou audiobook is narrated on the speaker while you sip a expresso. This is counter productive and will not help you on your journey to becoming a better reader.

Having a similar problem at the moment. And as usual, it is a multiplicity of factors. Start with age, meds, and eyesight. I'm losing both stamina to stay awake and durance with the eyes. Add to it baseball, which competes for the limited time I do have. Furthermore I am involved in a volunteer oral history project which has me reading the memoirs and other books by a number of people who are potential narrators, which are interesting but some are pretty heavy sledding. Not poor writing; just thought provoking, which doesn't help the stamina and durance much. By the end of October when baseball ends, I'm trusting I will fall back into a more normal reading pattern. I may have to insert a reading for pleasure break as well for a jump start. I have several sitting there on the bedside table begging. Towles' latest -- a collection of short stories -- might be the ticket.

Same for me. If I spend a lot of time online with social media my attention span for reading goes down. If I cut back on the online time my attention span goes back up.
@badminton I notice the same thing about myself. I hate it.
I used to love reading. I knew many would have been able to read more than me. I like taking in the novel and really digesting it. Now I know how I loved to read, but can I get myself to pick up a book? I'd rather write how I can't and that's about the most ridiculous thing a person can do. I've just been too distracted, a lot of things going on, but one thing before that took me away was reading a book. What's stopping you?

I recently got back into reading after being in a flare for so long from my illness. I highly recommend "Fourth Wing". The first book in a series from Rebecca Yarros. I get into ruts of not reading.. I think you need to feel relaxed, in the mood & commit special spot(s) for reading. A space you adore basically. :) Maybe audio books or a smaller book might be a good place to start? It happens to the best of us. I hope you enjoy reading again soon!

Definitely have that problem! I think book clubs \ book buddies help; i also feel like switching to short stories or comics for a while can get that motor running.

Do you mind if I ask what kind of stuff you like to read?

I always read, I can't be without a book. But there are times when I just can't read anything but entertainment, can't read anything that's serious in any way at all. I just wait till I get interested again, don't force it.

I think it's an age thing. I've gound that as I get older I just can't concentrate for long periods. I used to read a couple if books a week. Now it takes about a month to get through one!

Joining a bookclub or finding someone else to read with can be a good motivator. I read with my teenage daughter to help her develop good habits and we've got through quite a few classics.

I used to have a book going all the time (for years), but about a year ago, I just quit, and for no apparent reason. I still have no urge to pick up a book.

I go through waves. Right now mine is slowing down a bit. It will pick back up in the winter months.

Nope...i would probably be diagnosed as addicted to reading 😜

Yes I've had phases like that. I just forced myself to read.
