Audio books are frustrating

I can read so much faster than they are saying the words. Maybe in the car would be a better place to listen to audio books

I'm not really into audio books, but I love "full cast dramatizations" and radio plays. But, yes, I guess in the car would be the place for listening to audiobooks.

@NativePortlander1970 I've been reading reprints of some from the 1930s and 1940s recently: THE SPIDER, CAPTAIN SATAN, G-MAN: SUICIDE SQUAD.
@ChipmunkErnie Captain Satan? 😶

@NativePortlander1970 Ran for 5 issues in the 1930s -- a crime fighter with a crew of assistants who works outside the law -- usually outdoing the FBI. The typical idle rich man who fights crime, except his POV is after he takes down the criminals he steals all of THEIR stolen money and shares it out with is crew; he gets 1/3, they divide the rest.
I’ve never gotten into them. Just feel that I absorb/enjoy the written version better.
I understand that. There's a rate that both satisfies the listener, and does the content justice.
Especially important if it's instructional material, or you're a fast reader.

Personally, a leisurely pace is fine. I like to savor a good book, whether in print or on tape.
A talented narrator only adds to the experience.

@SethGreene531 Might of been my mood or even the actual narrator. Usually I don't have any problems with audio books but this one frustrated me.
@morrgin Certain voices, or inflections can be irritating. I have that.

And just like RL interactions, some days a narrator slow to the point can frazzle your nerves.
I've tried that as well. Turns out I can't process a word of an audiobook or podcast while driving. I would end up playing chapter one about 15 times before giving up and returning the audiobook to the library. I'm too focused on being an alert driver.

I do think it works on road trips, as long as you are a passenger.

I tend to agree. I dislike audiobooks generally as I find it harder to visualize what's happening than when I'm actually reading.

But I do really enjoy actual play and scripted podcasts quite a bit, so there's that.

I can relate. I use the audible app and it has a feature that lets you speed up the recording if you want.
morrgin · F
@NeckbeardThePirate exactly what I'm using. I was trying their free trial
Mardrae · F
I have never liked them. If I forget who a character is, I can't flip back a few pages to see. I'm just stuck guessing.

I love reading and never tried an audio version...i think i prefer my own imagination
I think sometimes they read too fast and robotic like.
morrgin · F
@Spoiledbrat sometimes they really are just a digital voice
iamnikki · 31-35, F
Adjust the speed of the narrator
morrgin · F
@iamnikki I can do this?
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@morrgin yes, not sure what platform you use though. I use Libby. You can definitely adjust the speed.
morrgin · F
@iamnikki I got it! I'm using Audible and got it to speed up

Yes you are a whiz.
@PleasurePunch And you wonder why you're single and lonely 🤬

@NativePortlander1970 who me? Ya got the wrong SWeep ;=)
Audiobooks were originally conceived in the 1970's to help learning readers follow along.
