Just a thought

I have this memory of buying someone food and i don't keep this memory because im proud of myself. I don't even it rememeber it making me feel good. I did it because it was as natural to me as drinking water when im thirsty, but i rememeber it because of the reaction i got from other military members i worked with and their reactions.

I was outside a sandwhich shop on lunch getting something to eat, and a young man asked me before i opened the door, if i could get him some food and that he was hungry. I said yeah man, come get what you want and that was that. We didnt really talk and he didnt get much. I recognized some faces there, but they didnt say anything to me until i got back to my unit and started work again.

The sandwich place comped my food which was nice of them too but these guys were smiling and laughing and said hey did that guy con you into you getting him some food? I was like the dude was hungry ill get someone some food if they want food. I won't give someone money but if they want food yeah ill get them some food, and i dont know what it was about my reply but their faces changed from happy and laughing to like just being changed like they had a revalation of some sort, and thats really what i rememeber most of all about that day was the change in their face.

I love this!

Reminds me of a memory I have of watching a UFC card at my sister’s place, with our dad attending as well. I was gonna provide takeout as food for all of us in exchange for my sister hosting the fights. When I arrived, dad and sis were already watching preliminary matches, and I announced I had the food. Apparently my dad didn’t know I was bringing takeout and asked “Hey, is there enough for me?” I told him “Yes, of course! Help yourself.” He was real happy because he was saying shortly after he arrived at my sister’s he started feeling hungry and was dreading spending the evening watching the fights on an empty stomach.

Like you, I don’t remember feeling particularly good about myself at the time, but now I look back at that memory fondly. Albeit inadvertently and situational, I’m real happy I got to feed my dad while he was hungry. Pleasantly surprising him all the while. I’ve always been real close with him, so it serves as a good mood booster whenever I recall that memory.

@Ducky sharing food is probably the best way to share an experience and make a memory.

I've had that experience on both edges, me buying food for others and accepting and receiving food offered to me in certain occasions by others. I wish the world was more like that..

@Boeing i guess that i should be thankful that im blessed enough to share with others.

@Rokan absolutely. Very much so. Not all realise that, and they remain in the scarcity side, I believe that's the true reason behind not sharing.

Also, being in the receiving end teaches you how there is no giving, without someone to receive.
Great story, you are a natural unsung hero.
I would never think of that as a con, just friends helping friends, and if they are complete strangers that is just beautiful.

@MisterBander maybe a duck definitely not a fox they are too shy.
@Rokan There was a kind of tame fox at a gas station I visited in Northern BC or maybe it was NWT. It was surviving on food scraps people gave it. I had one run into my tent one time, guess he was looking for a quick snack, but he left as soon as I said hello.

@MisterBander they would get kind of close on the runway overseas in the middle east but never within 50 feet. Probably looking for food i dont think they will find it on an active flightline though. We have to walk it daily for foreign objects to prevent damage.

Definitely sounds like something you’d do.
