And the party of fiscal responsibility has become the party of spending like a drunken sailor.

They didn't switch, they have always been all about overreach, just overreach that impacts others, not them. The overeach they dislike is watchdogs who won't let them gerrymander, won't let them practice racism, destroy the environment, wont let them deny women equal rights, and, and, and.

It's really just par for the course. Conservatives have always been big government when it comes to individual autonomy and personal decision making. The small government schtick has always been about business deregulation and taxes. It's only big or small based on what you care to look at, and they have been given leniency to tell people what to look at when judging them for so long that it's become part of the culture.
