Monk for a month?

I was reading about a course that encourages disconnecting from not just technology but society in general. No tech, no speaking, no meat, no alcohol, no touching, no eye contact and so on. Sounds more extreme than no nut November

Those who’ve done it (the Monk class) say it changed them. Good for them . But I don’t think it’s for me.

Can you live like a monk for a month? Or do you wanna party like it’s 99? 🤘🏼

Update
Here’s the link to what I was reading. It’s a 30day course at U of Penn

I know monks in a Catholic Abby near here. They eat meat, they drink, they have social contact with each other and with others. They hug. They use technology. But they try to be mindful about all of that, do it all in moderation, and to strike a sense of balance.

What you describe is far more extreme than I would ever find appealing. I think the term is "hermit" rather than monk. (There are some hermits here too, but obviously I have not met them!)

@DrWatson Definitely not for everyone

I spent two weeks in a Catholic monastery about a decade ago. It wasn't quite as extreme as that.

We did speak to each other but frivolous talk was frowned upon outside of certain times. We did eat meat except on Fridays, and we did drink wine in moderation.

The course you described sounds far more strict than the place I was at. It would probably be a positive experience though.

@SaorUladh I added link to the article I was reading.
How was your experience?
I've done several vipassna retreats ... highly recommended. Tough but worth it!

@constance Those who go to similar retreats always have positive feedback. I don’t know if I can sit on my ass or stay quiet for long
@MrGrumpy only way is to try ....

You shouldn't start with 30 days - but you can experiment with taking a weekend. Of course what matters is the context you do it in. Approaching it entirely from a secular context is probably a lot more difficult and in most cases not really helpful.
As long as I am allowed to shower, sleep, exercise, walk around, eat and drink enough to sustain me, then shouldn't be an issue. Could probably do a year.

I've heard people talk about doing similar things.

They really do talk about it....
Neither. lol

@SomeMichGuy Sourpuss 😜
@MrGrumpy lol

Well, the third millenium started in 2001, but I don't get into huge parties.

The monk thing...can't do it with a parent who needs me, etc.

Some people live like that already.
