An anatomy question

I have an anatomy question that has puzzled me since my childhood. If anyone knows anything about this, I'd be interested in learning about it.

When I was a kid, I remember there being these things projecting into or hanging into my nasal passages. They were rigid but covered with skin, slightly flexible, but it was painful to move them too much. (Yes, I stuck my fingers way up into my nose when I was a kid.)

After I had a tonsillectomy, however, these structures were gone.

For a long time, I thought these things were adenoids, but later learned that those are located in an entirely different place.

Today, I happened across a diagram of the structure of the nose, and it had illustrated in it something labelled as "lower lateral alar cartilage." Could this be the structure that was removed from my nose? Is removing these just a typical thing done during a tonsillectomy?

One thing to bring up is that, when they did my tonsillectomy, the doctor found that I had a massive abscess back there that took over an hour to drain. I was spitting up bloody mucus for a long time after that, and the medical staff all thought it was unusual. I don't know if that may have had an impact on this whole thing or not.

Anyway, it's just a minor mystery that has always puzzled me. Anyone know anything about this?
