I was in the first wave of kids to get the polio vaccine; and I went to school with at least one kid who would limp for the rest of his life because he'd had polio.

@samueltyler2

My father remembered how things were when he was a boy in Brooklyn. Many households had no phone. But someone might call the neighborhood pharmacy and ask for Mrs Jones. The pharmacist would then tell one of the boys working there to run down the street to tell Mrs Jones she had a call.
@DrWatson Dave and Peggy were in love. Both families were on our party line. When they called each other to play songs from the radio over the phone, Dad lost it. Not violent, just pacing the downstairs and stopping back every few minutes to pick up the phone and hear music. His eyes got scarier.

One night a parishioner skidded into our driveway at 11 pm or so, wild-eyed and apologizing, but his wife was dying and she wanted to see Dad, their pastor.

The next day, Dad went to see their parents.

That’s the day the music died.
@DrWatson Pretty common back there. Also common was when one of two close friends got a call and the operator said “Please hold.” Then she’d hook up another line and call one of the houses. “Is Dorothy there? She’s got a call.”

I remember having a snake bite kit that looked like a rubber capsule. It consisted of a razor blade and two rubber suction cups in the medicine cabinet with instructions on how to use it.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@samueltyler2 I probably didnt see it. But yes we do have rattlesnakes in our area. They usually dont want anything to do with you but sometimes they will choose a spot to hide that you might surprise them.They can be pretty cranky when they are shedding.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti Knowing how mean and evil your sister was to you, my next question would be, Did the snake die?😁
cherokeepatti · 70-79, F
@Adrift I don’t think so, it got away. But it could have very easily bit me. I was about 3 or 4 feet away from her pulling more branches up and tossing them on the fire.

If there were more copperheads under the other huge brush pile it’s likely they died. Because few hours later my father went and got a can of gasoline and doused that pile with it and lit it on fire. I don’t know he didn’t get blown over by the explosion. It was so loud that the neighbors came up our long driveway to see what happened.

My cell phone rings and the first thing I do is stare at my kitchen wall and wonder where my phone is…
