A very pressing matter

Vegans and vegetarians don't eat or like meat.

They want plant based diets.

Yet, they call their food by meat names.

"Oh, look at this steak (mushroom) I cooked ...doesn't it look like a steak?"

Why does it need to look like meat.. don't you dislike meat?

🤣😂
Not all vegans/vegetarians stop eating meat because they dislike it. Some loved it, but came to feel guilty that lives were lost. That’s why plant based substitutes exist, so they can enjoy the taste guilt-free. Then, of course, there are also people who liked meat but stopped eating it for health reasons.

@bijouxbroussard Most vegans and vegetarians I've known didn't dislike the taste of meat and stopped eating it for the reasons you stated. In fact, it was difficult for some of them to stop eating meat precisely because they did enjoy the taste.

I was a vegetarian for about ten years, and never felt the need to compare the food I was eating to meat. I was perfectly happy having a nice, filling dinner consisting of three different vegetables. I still am. I eat small amounts of meat now, but I can and do go days without eating any at all. It is just fuel for the body and as long as it tastes good, I don't have to call it something it is not.
Very good observation, Jags. My sister is a longtime vegan, and on her recent biz trip to Europe, she tried one of the vegan steaks. Her feedback was that, it tastes so much like real meat, that it tasted disgusting to her.

@Vivaci now, THAT is interesting!

I watched a video of a man who made a dinner that looked quite yummy. It was made with these huge mushrooms and he called it steak. I just think ..call it what it is ..a seared mushroom with a vegan butter sauce!
Right?

And she used to LOVE meat, so her saying that she didn’t like it particularly coz it tasted like meat made me wonder how much she’s changed. @JaggedLittlePill

Merriam-Webster defines "steak" as a slice of some food, but we're conditioned to expect it to mean "meat".

I'm not from the South, but my great grandma was, and "chicken fried steak" always confused me as a kid.

@Northwest Well...there you go! 🤣

Yes country fried steak and chicken fried steak never made sense to me but i liked it and it was meat so....🤣

@JaggedLittlePill That may have been the beginning of my meat aversion. Seeing all that fried chicken steak, smothered in gravy, nauseated me. Like literally. Apologies to chicken steak, or gravy lovers. I never recovered. I don't eat meat. Not crazy about portobello steaks, but I like other types of mushrooms, and love Salmon/Halibut steaks - grilled, of course 🤣

I guess it depends on the reason they don’t eat meat. Some probably like it. They just don’t want to consume meat. Maybe because of the slaughtering. Or they don’t believe it’s healthy.

Who knows all the reasons I eat whatever
Arby's I think it was made a carrot out of meat just because they could. I eat meat and I like carrots, I would not eat that nor would I eat green eggs and ham even though my name is not Sam I am
This culinary appropriation pains me.

@SW-User I once had a roomate who swore that tofurkey (tofu turkey?) tasted just like turkey. It did not. At all. My first Thanksgiving away from home...🤣
