Family.
With strangers we are mostly on our best behavior or trying to impress. With family we're more of our true selves. The good, the bad and the ugly.

I'd say the most revealing is how one treats others when noone's looking.

That's a good question, and I decided that I can't give a definitive answer. I have worked with people for decades and I have seen some people treat their families well and strangers terribly, while others do the opposite. Fortunately, most people that I know treat family and strangers with respect.

Strangers. You can't judge how they treat family without knowing the full history between them. With strangers that's simple: there is no history. You can see it with your own eyes from start to finish, making it very easy to judge fairly.
