The Road by Cormac McCarthy was my favorite book-to-movie adaptation. I saw the movie first when it came out in 2009, and then read it. What I took from reading it after the movie, only reinforced the emotional tones and struggles that father and son had to endure.

@Levenrack Yeah good one. Fantastic book and movie.

Lonesome Dove, the TV series was excellent and the casting was superb. The worst was The Prince of Tides, an excellent book, but the movie was produced by Barbra Streisand, who also starred in the movie. It had way too much Barbra and missed much of the point of the book.

Band Of Brothers. it wasn't a movie but a series on HBO. The book was great but the Series was way better

@FreeSpirit1 probably one of the few adaptations that my grandfather would've approved of (he was E company/506th)

I could write a long essay on this, but here are some great adaptations:
Sherlock Holmes stories (with Jeremy Brett)
Slow Horses novels (Gary Oldman)
Middlemarch (old BBC series)
The Big Short (Steve Carrell)
And one famous disaster was the Hollywood version of Bonfire of the Vanities, a novel by Tom Wolfe that is one of my favorite books. They utterly destroyed it. Someone actually wrote a separate book about about what a terrible movie it was!

The Shawshank Redemption. I actually liked it better than King's short story.

The Godfather. It's actually far superior to the book even.
The movie cut out everything that was meandering and unnecessary in the book.
