How have you dealt with scam callers?

I have always been wary of giving my phone number to sites such as Amazon because your info is shared to third parties. These 'third parties' could include hackers who can use your number to get personal info to convince your phone carrier to transfer your number to their SIM card and bypass the two factor authentication and over your accounts. Clever.

A girl at the other end with more accent than dialogue (they areusually Indian) asked me how I was this evening -which is a dead giveaway as to what is to come. She then proceeded to waffle on without pausing to hear my reply.

"I'm calling you from ???????". And I would tell you if I could have understood her so in the end I pressed block and ended it. But there have been quite a few of them.

One thing that I didn't know about is 'one ring' scams where scammers call and hang up after one ring, hoping you will be curious and call back a premium rate number which charges you international rates that go straight to the scammers.

I've started a new response when I'm not too rushed and am feeling playful: I say to the caller that in order to get through security I need their full name, date of birth and home post code. It's amazing how many hang up straightaway! 😂 (Then I block them). When I have a missed call - like you where it only rings once or twice) I use a website called https://who-called.co.uk/
It's very useful usually

I scam them back. Yes if I have nothing better to do then I keep them on the phone for as long as I possibly can. String them along and make them believe that they are in a chance of trying to rip me off. I have chatted to scammers, told them rice is boiling over and all sorts of other things to keep them waiting.

@PatientlyWaiting25 my youngest son (17) has been doing this for years too. 🤣

@Ambroseguy80 my gift to humanity. If they are talking to me, they cannot be attempting to scam anyone else. My favourite thing is to ask them whether they think their mother would be proud of them because of their chosen career lol. They really don't like that very much 🤣

@PatientlyWaiting25 a guilt trip only mothers could induce! 😭
I used to put my son on the phone with them when he was a toddler

I don’t answer calls from numbers I don’t recognize, and I never call anyone back until I’ve googled the number 🤷‍♂

I have a script which results in the scam call hanging up when I get to the part about the call being recorded. Works every time!
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
I answer the phone and don’t say anything so they think it’s not a real number.
MarineBob · 61-69, M
When it says spam I answer Immigration
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Usually playfully until they get angry with me, swear at me and hang up.
Hand the phone to your toddler and say it's Santa Claus.
