Where did this obsession with protein come from?

Have I been under a rock? Suddenly it is protein this and protein that and protein in everything. I don't understand where this new obsession came from.

I think it's from both weight loss and also muscle building regimens.
For weight loss, it's a macro that can help with feeling full when you eat.
There are a lot of people who are obese, so.

Just like many things, it became a fad and many jumped on the bandwagon.

It's documented that too much protein taxes the kidneys, heart and more.

It's sort of like the water bottle carrying and thinking we need an excessive amount of water, fad.

@Magenta It's only an issue if you have kidney disease. Otherwise it doesn't harm the kidneys. The only other issue is if you're not taking in enough fats with the protien.

People with kidney issues, such as my wife, are told to reduce their consumption of protein.

I don’t know. I have the same thought about the Dubai chocolate obsession. It came out of nowhere and now there is Dubai chocolate everywhere.

@deepblacknothingness That's them! 😆

@CrazyMusicLover The feeling of defeat when after years making fun of those, one of your friend starts going to the gym and then becomes one 😑
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Elessar Does he carry around those big 5 kg protein buckets already?

Protein is important to maintain or gain muscles. It's always been important.
deepblacknothingness · 61-69, M
@TheRealBarbossa That's true but it just seems to be the trend to put protein in everything nowadays from popcorn to pancakes to milk for lattes.
TheRealBarbossa · 36-40, T
@deepblacknothingness yeah, I don't get the protein powder. Plenty of other ways to get protein, even for vegans

Marketing does an amazing job. Selling a product that no one needs (except in very very particular circumstances) to the general public by inventing a non-existent problem is capitalism 101 really.

@littlemissdani Precisely.
