Where did this obsession with protein come from?

Have I been under a rock? Suddenly it is protein this and protein that and protein in everything. I don't understand where this new obsession came from.

Marketing does an amazing job. Selling a product that no one needs (except in very very particular circumstances) to the general public by inventing a non-existent problem is capitalism 101 really.
