I'm not going to begrudge the desperate. Any kind of scenario can happen where you need somebody, anybody to help.
But I would hope they don't expect anything to actually come of it. The sheer number of scammers out there makes it difficult for anyone to trust such a request to be legitimate. Further, if scammers see someone who needs help getting helped, they are just going to play copycat themselves.
So I guess my answer is it is okay. Just don't expect it to work.
Caveat: that is the case for general posts saying you need help. It is completely not okay to PM or otherwise put people on the spot.
