Initially? If it's a face to face thing, then it's appearance. But that fades and is supplanted by personality. Online...we really don't know how someone looks unless they share photos - and even then 🤷‍♂️. So, you rely on personality. There are some very charming people here who are very attractive and I don't really know what they look like.

Honestly they just have to be intriguing.

Looks are always the first thing we notice unless we are blind.
