Consistency: Genuine emotions tend to be consistent over time. If someone consistently expresses and demonstrates a particular emotion in various situations, it is more likely to be genuine.
Non-verbal cues: Pay attention to non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice. Genuine emotions are often accompanied by authentic non-verbal cues that align with the expressed feelings.
Emotional congruence: Genuine emotions are typically congruent with the context and the person's experiences. If someone's emotions seem appropriate and aligned with the situation, it suggests authenticity.
Empathy and understanding: Genuine emotions are often accompanied by a genuine sense of empathy and understanding from the person expressing them. They genuinely try to connect with others and acknowledge their own and others' emotions.
Depth and complexity: Genuine emotions often exhibit depth and complexity. They are not superficial or overly simplistic. People with genuine emotions tend to have a more nuanced understanding and experience of their feelings.

It doesn't matter if they are, because feelings change with time so the real question is do you feel like playing Russian roulette

@BeefySenpie Spot on!

@BeefySenpie so whats the alternative to "playing Russian Roulette"? Never getting close to anyone because you dont trust their feelings for you not to weaken over time?

If I knew, I'd probably not be this socially awkward and lonely. 🥲

It's hard to ever know
It's easier to judge if a person is sincere by watching how they act to others, especially those they have no particular reason to be nice to
If they seem sincere and caring in the worst of scenarios, their feelings are probably genuine
If not, they're probably full of it on that too

Someones actions speak louder than their words. I notice a lot of answers are about feelings not lasting so it doesn't matter. Things always evolve and change including feelings. If feelings aren't lasting there was probably an indicator early on, and that is how someone behaves, someone can only pretend for so long.

They will "walk the walk" and not simply "talk the talk". In other words, don't rely on what they say, rely on what they do. Too, genuine often comes with a shelf life.

People show their true colors when they think people aren't looking.
Most of the time.
You can find all their dirt in the dark.
The thing is though, everyone has past and people can change.

It's usually pretty clear to me intuitively, unless I'm part of the equation.
My suggestion would be to consult an outside observer.

You don't. All you can do is assess their actions.

Personally, I don't trust anyone's words as genuine. I just assume everyone is lying.
Menetics · 26-30, F
@IWasCallingYaLarry That only leaves you bitter though and you’ll end up pushing everyone away.
IWasCallingYaLarry · 31-35, M
@Menetics Uhuh. Yeah. I know. I've had people who I became close with who pretended to love and care about me so much and tried to make plans to hang out with her and others around me, only for her or whoever else to not hmu back about plans we made, and to ignore me after a while meanwhile having no problems going away to upstate or another state on vacations with other friends and her boyfriend. I've been in fake friendships like that with people. And I ultimately walked away. So yeah, I do have reasons why I just assume everyone is lying.

You should feel it in your heart and mind both, but always be cautious as narcissists can fool the best of us. Most often do not get involved with those that worry more about themselves and you will be good.

Watch out for the body language with their voice tone.
It’s not difficult to catch phonies with their meaningless words.
