This is not a gun violence question

It's just a gun question. I don't even own a glue gun.

I have a phone I open with my face and an iPad I open with my fingerprint. Has anybody invented an identity lock for guns?
🤔
TexChik · F
Yep . It’s very expensive and by making it mandatory , that would restrict lower income Americans from owning a firearm, thereby creating an infringement upon their right to purchase a weapon. That is unconstitutional.
TexChik · F
@Tetsuya as I clearly stated. In my first reply . My husband and I own a lot of guns, none of which have any of that crap on them . They don’t sell .
Tetsuya · 51-55, M
@TexChik And after that point was made you went off on a tangent about constitutionality.
I made the point that some of the sensor used in the ring and sensor lockers were unreliable.
We are on the same page mostly.
TexChik · F
@Tetsuya not a tangent Mr lib, I merely pointed out the law . You don’t like it? Too bad.

There is a device that I’ve heard about that they can embed into a ring that you wear that will unlock a gun. I don’t know if they are being mass-produced or the name or anything but I think that is an excellent idea.

@cherokeepatti not great if another family member needs to use it
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MasterLee unless they have a matching ring. Otherwise they may want to get their own protection in that case.
ElizaJane · 51-55, F
@MasterLee that is a good point.
MasterLee · 56-60, M
Yes there are but very expensive.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
How many criminals are going to buy the lock?
ElizaJane · 51-55, F
@Nitedoc Why would only criminals buy the lock? My phone is locked, because I don't want anyone else in my house using it. That's why my computer is locked too. Why not put that privacy on your expensive weapon? Who should be firing your own gun but you?
Again, not a gun owner, just asking if the technology existed and if anyone used it.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@ElizaJane most lawful gun owners have locks and safes
ElizaJane · 51-55, F
@MarineBob How do you keep a home defense weapon in a safe though

In the 90's a friend of mine and I (co-workers in a Silicon Valley company at the time) came up with a fingerprint ID/unlocking system concept. This included an algorithm to effectively correlate a read thumbprint against one registered in the gun. It was ultimately determined to be not feasible due to cost and potential issues should the gun should not unlock in an emergency.

Not sure if there has been any headway now, years later.
And they have but I like the way you think. Problem: expense. The one pictured is$177.

Of course, that's a steal if it saves one life.

@Mamapolo2016 think what we pay for our stupid phones so we can get a good camera or what we pay for more storage in the laptop 😑
It seems like a gun is a big investment anyway. thank you for the info!
@ElizaJane Meant to include this in comment.

from what I've read the sensor in the gun often fails from the constant recoil shock if you practice with the gun a decent amount
Funlov · M
There are companies out there. I do have that technology but it’s strictly military so far.
acpguy · C
Yes but they did not work well for the owners.
Wow. This is a great idea!
TheRascallyOne · 31-35, M
Yes multiple
Adstar · 56-60, M
