Depends on the site. If it is commercial (other than my bank) or social media, not a chance.

Companies House requires verification of directors and other significant persons.
I could not find my passport so was obliged to obtain a new one.

@emmasfriend OK, but that is a statutory condition of operating a limited company in the UK along with all the substantial legal and financial benefits that brings. Not a condition of using their website.

Of course, if we had a national ID card (as most other European countries do) we would not have to go through the absurd inconvenience/expense of presenting passports and driving licences as proof of identity.
