Is AI here to stay or will it be here for a bit and go like trends before?

If we can avoid it killing us, it will ultimately be banned in any form which does or could pass the Turing test.

@SomeMichGuy That hurtle was leaped 11 years ago 🤷‍♂
@Zaphod42 No, we have not ultimateky banned them.

@SomeMichGuy That’s my point. A model passed the turing test more than a decade back, and here they still are.
@SomeMichGuy the thing is we've not yet successfully banned nuclear weapons and probably never can, there will always be a North Korea or an Al Qaeda that's not on board with that and very much wants to have their own nukes, and in some cases even use them, even if it means killing themselves, for reasons such as religious zealotry

Once something is a thing, it is notoriously difficult to ban it, even if banning it would make complete sense and be for the greater good. The US couldn't even ban alcohol for long during Prohibition, and the drug war has never stopped the flow of drugs into the hands of people who still want them (and would perhaps give the finger to anyone trying to help them kick an addiction, while they unknowingly inject their final fatal dose, and sneer "this is here to stay, we have to just accept it, and I like it, it's fun, and I don't give 2 sh*ts how many narcos died so I could have this, me, me, me, me, MEEEE!").
@ThirstenHowl True.

But if we have a global thermonuclear war, they might be banned, and you don't make them cheaply or easily like fertilizer bombs.

And if we have a struggle for survival with AI, I think it will be banned.
