Can you appreciate someone’s art if you don’t respect their character ??

Yep, though it is difficult.
I respect Robert De Niro for his acting yet despise his politics.
The composer Richard Wagner for the same.
No, art is only a social contribution to society (as opposed to actual or tangible) and if your social contributions come with bad character, they'll have undertones that are harmful to the world. Paintings are pretty but if one was made by someone who thinks eugenics are a good idea, that painting sure won't be in on my wall.

This also comes with having responsibility and not overdoing it when judging someone's character. For example, someone disagreeing with me does not immediately mean they believe in crazy things like that.
@SinlessOnslaught I very much disagree with your definition of art, as I strongly believe it can be actual or tangible.

Such as Pythagorean has a Cult that believed in some things which we would consider evil today, but he/they also taught the Pythagorean theorem which is still taught today.
Yeah, you can hate a person but respect some that they did.

One example, Hitler, absolutely horrible person, but under him, a lot of things evolved, such as mass transportation highways.

Though not to say Hitler created the art idea that is the highway, but I believe it was under his leadership that it was ordered to be built.

And I have a hard time imagining life today (at least in America) without highways.

But my understanding is a lot of moderation happened during and after that time due to the Nazi's ... and while we can hate the Nazi's I think we can appreciate the moderation of that time period, and the period that followed.

Only item that came out of the fall out of WW2 was the space race, with both American and the USSR taking Nazi scientist away from Germany (so they couldn't be asked to build any new evil technology for Germany) and they had them focus on space 🚀

I rarely look into it. If I like art, music, film, book etc I like it. Sometimes if subsequently I hear something about the creator that I don't like doesn't change that artwork. Although I may stop seeking out new works etc if I don't want to give them patronage

yeah of course

Absolutely. I separate it. The art lives its own life.
@CrazyMusicLover If we're talking about someone who did some truly bad things, I would be too caught up with the fact that the painting would be up for people to see and comment on, perhaps even use it as a talking space to support and glorify more ideas like that.

This is coming from someone who lives in a country where everything is considered offensive and subject to censorship but I'm not without a few real experiences myself.

Anyway I respect you, sorry for coming in the way I did. I think I may have offended.

@SinlessOnslaught I know that people tend to act like angry apes and try to guilt trip and crucify others through their own sense of morality, no matter how overly sensitive and hysterical it seems to me, so for example if I listen to some music made by evil authors or authors with some questionable background and worldviews, I don't shout it out to the world at every opportunity I get.
@CrazyMusicLover Yes I hear you on the first part. I've seen too many people here with no one to talk to irl, driven away. ❤‍🩹

When they’ve been involved in horrible things it sours their work for me. I can never go back to before I found out those things and not remember when I see them in movies or whatever.
Yes, I can separate the two. 🙂
Separation... the art is not who they are - especially in music. The person singing the song may or may not be the author.

I can't do it. Art is an expression of its creator, and if the creator is a detestable person, I don't care for anything they do or make.
