In your opinion is it considered rude to not smile and simply say "how can I help you?" While working behind the counter

According to my boss that's rude and I should be cheery and welcoming to customers. I am welcoming I'm saying hi what can I get for you. I just don't smile or don't find it necessary to be animated. On another note if I'm busy making drinks I'm not going to look up to greet everyone. I just want to focus on making good drinks ok don't bug me.

I'm not offended lol

I think these things should come with incentive. It's hard to convince people to put in the effort when their check looks the same regardless.

But then again it is customer service so that's kinda your job.

@Selah I would be more accepting of it if it wasn't forced and came across more genuine. I'd be happier if we had better staffing situations and I wasn't stressed and juggling so much.
Selah ·
@Crimsondrops that's totally fair. It's a ridiculous request under those conditions.
I guess your boss just doesn't understand your personality..
GeniUs · 56-60, M
It's ironic for somebody to call you rude as 'you are rude' is a rude statement. I'd smile though everybody looks prettier when they smile and you never know when you'll meet the love of your life.

@GeniUs Yeah it's funny when you put it that way. Lucky for me I already have a great partner though I wonder how he puts up with me somedays.

Smiling makes me think you really want to help me. No smile tells me you don't really care.
exexec · 61-69, C
@Crimsondrops It sounds like you need to look for a different job.
Crimsondrops · 36-40, M
@exexec I do, I am beyond burnt out but unfortunately I can't find anything that pays as well.
exexec · 61-69, C
@Crimsondrops I understand. Keep looking. Something will open up when you least expect it.

A “Hi!” or “Hello”, with some kind of smile is something that just comes with good customer service. It’s kind of the nature of the beast.
I don't want to be bugged when I'm shopping and I generally think that customers are the same way.

So, I prefer to leave them alone and let them come to me.
TheShanachie · 61-69, M
It’s not rude I don’t trust smiling strangers
Crimsondrops · 36-40, M
@TheShanachie If someone is too cheery or too smiley it feels like I'm about to be swindled or lied to.
markinkansas · 61-69, M
ya get bigger tips with a smile
Crimsondrops · 36-40, M
@markinkansas True but my coworkers can make up for my lack of enthusiasm. Most of the time I'm on drink duty and get left alone.

Most jobs consider it rude not to greet the customer and a lot of customers do too.
I know it can be a generational thing but in general you should greet people who enter your shop.
Crimsondrops · 36-40, M
@REMsleep We may be the same generation. millennial?
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@Crimsondrops I am technically the youngest Gen X according to most charts or according to one or two I've seen, I am the eldest millennial.
I dunno. I am part of a micro generation that doesn't fit either perfectly but socially I am a millennial and would be most comfortable with millennials.

I worked retail for 8 years; I don’t really like people but I will do my best to help them. Half of the time I wasn’t cheery but I found most customers don’t really care they just want you to help them and know what you’re doing. This was Home Depot by the way 🤷🏾‍♂
