The United States is now at the weakest it has ever been in my lifetime. This man has destroyed our soft power by eliminating the programs behind the goodwill and leverage we had generated from aiding others with humanitarian and infrastructure assistance. He has shown that we cannot be trusted to follow even the deals we have initiated without our allies and trading partners - and in some cases deals he himself claimed credit for making in the first place. He has weakened NATO, an alliance that basically helped us secure our hegemony in the world.
Honestly, he's more than an inept commander. He's an enemy of the United States itself.

@hippyjoe1955 You prefer having nukes raining down on your pointy little head, eh
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
@sunsporter1649 No which is why I oppose Israel and the USA. Iran doesn't have any nukes and had Israel and the US stayed out of Iran Iran was not going to build any nukes. I don't know that they are working on one now and neither do you. The funny thing is that your side Israel is the only one that has promised to use nukes as its Sampson Option and the US is the only nation to ever have used nukes in war. Maybe you missed that part in your obviously very limited history lessons.

Let's see what happens in the mid-terms. Trump could threaten to wage nuclear war if we vote Democratic Party in the mid-terms. If we call his bluff, we could decimate the Republican Party and wipe it out in both chambers of Congress. Then Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies can sent Trump packing and throw him to the wolves.
it takes 2/3 of the vote of the senate to convict.

If Trump leaves NATO the American armaments industry will collapse, only having American forces to sell to. America will have to start a lot more wars to stay in business.😷
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@ArishMell Probably so in smaller quantities. But the whole equipment philosophy of NATO forces is the integrated fighting model that has a common platform for all forces, which, wouldnt you know it, just happens to be American.😷
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@whowasthatmaskedman True, but the question would be, is this still NATO of all the other members, or would some new alliance form; presumably based largely on European, Australian and Canadian military and industrial standards?
After all, the scientific and engineering, technical standards and accreditations, of course already exist, devised and agreed by the ISO, and based largely on British and other European practice.*
A "New NATO" may well be a serious blow to the US defence manufacturers, who are not above taking over foreign manufacturers to take the IP and profits at the very least. If so, then I think they would be even less fussy about selling internationally, without caring for the consequences.
The big question of course, is not technical or military quality although there is a plethora of variants of essentially similar equipment. They are as good as the US ones. Instead it is of money and the willingness to pay for it all.
* (The SI units' metric base is a French invention, and the management-control system ISO9001 was modelled partly on the UK's "DEF-STANnumber" product-QC. So rejected automatically by the USA. Revising and agreeing them as ISO standards was the only way the USA would accept them - and then grudgingly.)

I don't think he can on his own. Even if he could and started today, he'd need to find homes for all the returning forces removed from bases controlled by other countries and places for all the equipment (unless he does another Afghanistan-type exit). By the time he's served the 1 year notice to the rest of NATO and planned (I know that is a laughable word in his world), the end of his term will be upon him and the world will for a second time breathe a sigh of relief as they bid good riddance.

@ArishMell You have to ask yourself “What would Demented Donnie gain by doing this?” I don’t like to ask questions like that, because to answer it you have to try to put yourself into his (failing) mind and that’s a dark, dark place fueled on greed, bigotry, sin, and extreme narcissism.
Also, you have to approach those thought experiments by leaving your critical thinking skills out in the hallway because Demented Donnie has no critical thinking skills and makes decisions based entirely on “what’s in it for ME ???
So…if the question is: Would Demented Donnie pull the United States out of NATO (or the UN, or any long-standing treaty)?
There is no question that he might try to do so by one of his illegal executive orders—but that’s another factor that he doesn’t even consider.
So, in his warped, barely functioning mind, and assuming he actually does give it some forethought rather than just doing it on a whim (always a clear and present danger with this fool), he’ll set it up in these terms…
Will I gain more by withdrawing the US or will I gain more by continuing to use the threat to do so? Also, if I actually do it, then I lose the chance to use it in the future when it might gain me more…
Frankly, I bet most of our allies would consider him pulling out a blessing!

@KunsanVeteran I cannot comment on his mental health in any real way but I do have a strong impression Mr. Trump is becoming less rational and more desperate with time.
He's staggered into a trap of his own making and even if he dares consider he set it, he cannot now easily back down without making the USA - and himself - look weak in the face of Israel and Iran.
Every settlement to him is a "deal", as if talking about second-hand cars, and a deal to him is one in his favour, but he cannot or will not see the world does not work like that.
So threats to pull out of NATO may be no more significant than his notions that this war with Iran will "end soon" - having told everyone the USA had "won" it two or three weeks ago; or any other of his bellicose statements.
It would be his own fault if the entire military turned round and said, "Mr. President, we are no longer going round launching unlawful attacks on other countries to suit you. Sir!"

@jshm2 “It's why he's sucking up to Russia so much.”
It’s one of many reasons, but mostly because Demented Donnie is deeply in debt to Russian banks which translates to: Demented Donnie is deeply in debt to Putin and his oligarchs.
Another reason is that if you personally oppose or stand up to Putin you die shortly, usually extremely painfully, and under “mysterious” circumstances…
The same can be said about KJU, MBS, etc.

Trump is skirting the law. He is commander-in-chief and every piece of US weaponry and military personnel is at his disposal. A nuclear attack need immediate response from the President. This is why he carries the nuclear football around 24/7. Congressional endorsement can be acquired later if it is still around.
Actually he does. Go read the law. Your ignorance is stunning. If a president can unilaterally declare war he is a king not a president.

@hippyjoe1955 Credable sources, eh
Beginning in 2007, Johnson emerged as a critic of Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. As a result he was attacked by his former allies on the political left. According to The New York Times, Johnson is "best known for spreading a hoax... in 2008 that Michelle Obama had been videotaped using a slur against Caucasians". On May 16, 2008, Johnson posted an item entitled, "Will Barack Throw Mama From the Train?" which alleged that a tape existed of Michelle Obama "railing against 'whitey' at Jeremiah Wright's church. Johnson claimed that Republicans were in possession of the tape and it "is being held for the fall to drop at the appropriate time." In a subsequent post, Johnson claimed that Obama's appearance had occurred when she was on a panel with Louis Farrakhan. He also explained that he himself had not seen the tape, but had spoken with "five separate sources who have spoken directly with people who have seen the tape."[14][non-primary source needed] The Obama campaign's "Fight the Smears" website denied the rumor, saying, "No such tape exists. Michelle Obama has not spoken from the pulpit at Trinity and has not used that word. "On October 21, 2008, Johnson said that, according to one of his sources, the McCain campaign "intervened and requested the tape not be used."
Wilkerson stated in 2009 that Guantanamo Bay detention camp continues to hold innocent men. Wilkerson said that he felt compelled to come forward after hearing former Vice President Dick Cheney state that President Barack Obama's plans to close Guantanamo made the public less safe. Commander Jeffrey Gordon, a Guantanamo spokesman, declined to comment on Wilkerson's specific observations. Gordon said that "dealing with foreign fighters from a wide variety of countries in a wartime setting was a complex process".
In The New Republic, columnist Jamie Kirchick criticised the plausibility of Wilkerson's allegations, calling him a "third-rate conspiracy theorist and a borderline bigot".
In 2013, Wilkerson speculated without evidence that Israel had used chemical weapons in Syria. These comments were termed by his critics and supporters of Israel as antisemitic.
Specifically, Wilkerson suggested the Ghouta chemical attack was an Israeli false flag operation to discredit Bashar al-Assad's government in Syria.

Trump has the support of a majority in Congress, which is why the latter failed to block him. This reflects badly on us as a nation. The fact that he's an incompetent narcissist and world class liar is a different story.

@Northwest His incompetence and dementia are beyond doubt.
I suffered through his entire miserable excuse for a speech tonight.
People who are stoned are much more coherent than he was. He represents a clear and present danger to our national security, his security clearance should be immediately revoked, he should be forced to face a thorough mental competency evaluation by an impartial panel of experts and, failing such, should be removed from office.
If found competent to understand the charges against him, he should then face jury trials. If found not to be competent, then he should be institutionalized.

@KunsanVeteran I ended up watching it as well. He did not take any questions, because he had nothing new: This i all Obama's fault, our children are sleeping better now, regime change happened because they're all dead, those still alive are moderate, he rebuilt the military, bombs are beautiful.
The usual lies and my children are smart enough to know that we're going to be looking over shoulders on our trip to Europe and the Middle East (if the latter actually happened).

He looks normal to me and no different from the day he took office the first time in his first term.
Trump is a businessman. There is no way he can comprehend the USA, the biggest corporation in the world he is running can lose to Iran, a street corner hot-dog stand in Midtown Manhattan.
It's hard not to see things in his favor when there is no other way to trade except in the US currency, and he holds all the cards. He is not at war with Russia or China. He knows well not to do that.
Yes, nothing is significant to Donald Trump except the Trump brand, and has become the USA.
Not likely to happen. Generals are being fired at will as we speak.
