“Have a strong military so we don’t have to use it.” is in principle very good. But then he neglects that a strong nation, militarily or otherwise, thrives not only on inner strength, but also on its alliances. Isolationism has never led to strength. Not even the Soviet Union was isolationist. But in the president’s view if you need help from others or if you help others you are weak. And if you are weak you must be left to die.
