Back in the late 1950s I was playing on the kitchen floor when Dad came into the house and asked me if I would like to go with him to get a load of hay. It was cold out and there was a lot of snow on the ground so I wasn't sure what he had in mind but I scrambled into my coat and boots and hat and mitts and raced out the door. There in front of me was a huge bobsleigh with two gigantic Percheron horses in harness the black harnesses standing out against their deep bay hides. Dad swooped me up and put me on the hay rack. He gathered the reins and clucked his tongue and off we went across the fields and into a secluded brush patch. In the middle of the brush stood a hay stack. Dad whoaed the horses and jumped down into the deep snow. He began forking huge bites of hay onto the rack while I did my best to keep it packed down. The sun was getting low on the horizon and the wind was picking up as the temperature dropped. I was getting a little chilled and my shivering was making it hard to pack the hay. With a flourish Dad tossed the fork onto the top of the hay and climbed onto the sleigh. He gathered the reins clucked his tongue and the horses leaned into their collars and the laden sleigh began to move. Making a wide circle the horses were soon heading for home. I was sheltering from the wind behind the hay when Dad called me over and gave me the reins. My hands were so cold hanging onto the hard leather straps was hard but I was determined. What seemed like forever we got back to the farm yard and Dad sent me into the house to warm up. I was crying in pain as the frost came out of my fingers and ears but I couldn't stop smiling as I remembered the thrill of driving the horses.

@being Thank you for enjoying it. Yes my grandfather was famous for his Percheron horses. Dad inherited them when Grandpa died the year before our hay ride.

@hippyjoe1955 in that case it might have been a first for the horses too...? I mean, perhaps your grandpa wouldn't go for it with such a weather...?
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@being No they were well broke work horses. Grandpa and Dad used them all the time to pull wagons and sleighs. I was too young to notice but they were rough shod to help them gain traction on ice.
After a fast fall on a ski slope, I sometimes find myself sledding down a bit on my chest!

A really good fall is called a "yard sale" because your gear, helmet, skis, poles, are spread out on the snow like a yard sale.

A snow sled is pulled, not self-propelled.

@swirlie You don’t own a snowmachine or you would go sledding with your friends. 😚

I have owned a snow mobile and it isn't called 'sledding' when one goes out with friends in a group of "snow machines".

It's called 'snow cross racing or trail riding'.

"Sledding" is a slang term for 'trail riding'.

"Snow machine" is a slang term for 'snow mobile'.

A "show machine" is a machine that makes artificial snow on ski hills in Canada, Europe and Scandinavian countries.

Not a real sleigh but once last year, me and shifu no2 were coming back from a walk in the snowed mountain. He suggested me to bend my knees but still touch the ground with my soles. He grabed my hands and whilst he was walking forward and in front of me, I was sliding behind him with my shoes during a descending...it was really fun...:)
..the closest I've reached to the sleigh thing as I haven't experienced much snow in my life

The last time I went sledding was when I was 15.

Never. On the rare snow days, we used trays, garbage can lids, or anything we could find that would slide down a hill. Fun, but hard to control.
Never .. we tried once on a snowy hill but we don't have a sled 😅
Sleigh ride, last December
