Couldn't use my mother is ill, as she is dead.
I could just put my wife is ill, that wouldn't always be an excuse as it has often been true.
If I tried
I have to stay home to make offerings to the gods to improve my health.

I have to fetch stones for the scribe.

It would prove to them that I am completely mad and would send the men in the white coats to cart me off. It may happen one day though.
