I sometimes see women complaining about how men dressed more elegantly in days past…but keep in mind

When men dressed like this:
Women were dressing like this:

Just saying. 😉

It wasn't just Grant's clothes ,it was his manners and general deportment.."Every man wants to be Cary Grant..even I want to be Cary Grant:Cary Grant🤣

@bookerdana Isn’t it marvelous that Quentin Crisp participated in the video ? 😃

@bijouxbroussard Sure..like Yoko Ono appearing in Be My Yoko by Bare Naked Ladies😄

how elegant! how classy!
meggie · F
My great aunt told me once that they all got dressed up to go to the shops. Hats and coats etc. The men polished their shoes and wore ties everywhere.
meggie · F
@bijouxbroussard do they still dress like that?
@meggie Lol, no. They’re in their 80s and wear blue jeans.
meggie · F
@bijouxbroussard bless them
Iwillwait · M
Yes, everyone had a touch more class. Not one of these people would go shopping or fly in their pj's.
meggie · F
@Iwillwait I saw a whole family in Asda (UK'S Walmart) wearing grubby onesies and crocs.
@meggie Sounds like Walmart!
Iwillwait · M
@DropTopDig She clearly indicated it was just like.

As someone who only wears jeans, I don't complain about that. I would hate it being inappropriate to wear them. I've made jokes that I can only time travel back to the 1960s because of this.

I love it. Wearing a fedora always makes me feel elegant. :P Some of these traditions I wish were still around.

My Grandmother used to dress like this ..I have her old photos

I love how they dressed back then. It puts me in mind of the answer work gave when asked why people who had no contact with the public needed to abide by the dress code - they said what you’re wearing affects your attitudes and behavior. In short, dressing for work would inspire you to behave in a professional manner. In that same vein, I think the effort and formality of dress went hand in hand with more effort and formality of behavior. There was a group on Instagram of women who loved the fashion of this era and generally wore it whenever they could and it seemed to be as much about how it made them feel as how it looked. I can appreciate both very much, but my closet full of jeans, boots, and men’s shirts is in no danger, I think. 😄
Madmonk · M
Elegant. Somehow I see you dressed like this
SW-User
@bijouxbroussard My. You certainly are beautiful young lady.
@SW-User Thank you. Back in the day…😅

@bijouxbroussard Well I'm sure it's still true today.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
You make it sound like all men and women dressed like that. When it was only the few who could afford it.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard Yeah, fashions have gone down hill. But I'd prefer a pair of sneakers then those old school shoes.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Thevy29 That's but it comes down to. I see a photo and think, "why can't we?" And then I look at my pants and think, "not today."
@Graylight You get what I’m saying. 😄
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
I grew up with everyone getting pretty dressy as a matter of course (Moscow is one of those cities), and tbh it seemed like a huge hassle.
@QuixoticSoul When I was a child in the City, women still wore hats and gloves when they went out.
sciguy18 · M
It always amuses me when I watch footage of old baseball games. It seems every man in the stands was wearing a suit, tie and hat.

@sciguy18 Yeah, that's when folks dressed up to go out. I don't necessarily agree with the politics of those days, but I wish people would dress better.

I love how women dressed back then very classy and timeless
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
A great British icon.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@TheConstantGardener Huh. I thought it was just the Transatlantic accent. I actually never realized he was British.
TheConstantGardener · 56-60, M
@Graylight I'm not sure he would have got as far as he did with his original name but Cary Grant seemed to suit him much better than Archibald Leach.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@TheConstantGardener So true. Especially here, where image is everything.
Eklipse · F
Hey it was an elegant style.
Graylight · 51-55, F
Something to be said for snazziness. We used to wear clothes to accentuate the form; now we wear them to accentuate bare body parts.

Oh God, that sounded old. Gotta go!
Lacemaker · 41-45, F
Yes, everyone dresses far more casually now. It's by far more practical but sometimes it's nice to dress up.
I love watching films from that era just to look at the fashions.
JimboSaturn · 51-55, M
I actually love that post-war clothes for both men and women. For some reason I find the women so stylish and super sexy.
I see it at times.
Woman dressed up to the 9s legs and heels when the guy with them is a slob in jeans.
@Robynthebeautiful I rarely see that. Everyone seems to be pretty casual nowadays, not that there’s anything wrong with that. But I found it amusing that young women, who don’t remember the days of girdles, pantyhose or stockings and garters, hats and gloves (and would hate having to wear them) complain that “men used to dress so elegantly !” Because in those days, women dressed elegantly, too—with all the hassle that involved. 😳
Justmeraeagain · 56-60, F
I like the girl styles,too.
But ,we don't dress up like that any longer.Vaild point.
@Justmeraeagain Exactly. As women began dressing more casually in public, so have men.
SubstantialKick · 31-35, M
My grandmother dressed like that back in the 1960s.
@SubstantialKick Yes. That’s what I remember; my mother wore hats and gloves whenever she went out back then.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
If only all us guys looked like Cary Grant, right?
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
Yes. The women looked gorgeous
Dshhh · M
hey thats a classy look

@Graylight I agree
Soooo elegant!
Exactly. Women who complained about how men dress these days seem to want it both ways.
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@LordShadowfire or, just possibly, when it comes to men, they don't want it any way...
@Yulianna Never mind...
Yulianna · 22-25, F
@LordShadowfire i don't...
