Given the only mass shooting in Australia in almost 30 years, the question of guns, gun ownership, and needs/desires to own them is in question

I've never handled a gun except once. I fired a .22 rifle once and once only in my youth when visiting an uncle who had friends that owned a rural property. I was shooting at a line of coke cans.

Despite that I have never had a desire to shoot guns, or have a gun license, or own any guns, and that's never changed. Guns are designed for one thing - to kill.

Here in Australia we want freedom from guns (and religion), not freedom of guns (and religion).

Plenty of Australian's have gun licenses and legally own guns for legitimate reasons, including military and law enforcement, rural landholders and primary producers, licensed security guards, etc.

But that's it apart from a small subset of the population subscribing to being criminals who want usually illegal but sometimes legal guns. The general population doesn't for the most part need, or want, guns here.

I know that's completely different to the USA, or many other parts of the world where gun culture is bizarrely linked to the concepts of freedom and safety with a belief that you can't be free or safe unless you have a gun.

Guns are meant for one purpose - killing.

What you say is true, but here in the US, the "right to bear arms" is first and foremost to defend ourselves from our government. While many judgments have been handed down to extend that "right" beyond that scope, the philosophy behind that right is what is most important. We could legislate that the firearms cannot leave the home and our rights wouldn't be violated.
I agree that there is no longer a need for possessing firearms, but I would never agree to disarm civilians but allow "the state," and "the state" being local law enforcement and the military, to keep their arms. It would be a foolish idea to disarm the military, but the current administration in the White House is proving why we would need to defend ourselves from our government.
The other side of this coin in the US, is there are over 380 thousand jobs directly linked to the firearms industry, so neither side of the political isle wants to eliminate 380 thousand jobs, nor do I, but we need a real solution to our school shootings problem.

I read in the news that Australia enacted a serious crackdown on gun ownership after the last mass shooting in Tasmania n 1997. Clearly this worked and this sight of men openly carrying arms at Bondi Beach was unusual enough for members of the public to tackle them and prevent more fatalities. Yet there are estimated to be more guns in circulation today than there were in 1997, so scope for improvement.

The U.S. is a very diverse country. It is made up of a large number of different ethic, religious and cultural groups. There is also a wide diversity of politcal opinions. There are many differing opinions on the gun issue.
@badminton ...except that there is a majority which comsistently wants gun control.

And in the UK, where I currently live, the government banned private handgun ownership after the Dunblane mass shooting in 1996. An amnesty was declared, thousands and thousands of handguns were handed in.

Since then, not one single mass shooting.

Ban guns. It works.

Here are 2 things that i know for sure:

1) I would rather have guns and not need them, than to need them and not have them.

2) If there ever comes a time when the United States government calls its citizens to arms against a threat. Be it foreign or domestic, We will not be crying, cowering, and just waiting to die. Have you seen instances, movies, stories, where people go house to house and just murder citizens or drag them in the streets to be slaughtered. This will definitely not be that!

@AngelUnforgiven And in this time where a President is ruling your country, bypassing your legislators by using 'Executive Orders' and the lawfully landed immigrants are being dragged from their homes and deported, would this not be a good time to reign in an autocratic ruler and claim those 2nd Amendment rights?

It takes somebody to pull the trigger
So guns aren't the issue
The mental health of the one pulling the trigger is the issue
Let's focus on that

@MoveAlong

Of course you are such a low life that you need to deflect and attempt to throw insults around
Go get some education and self esteem

You are what's wrong with society
You think your right & nobody else is and when you can't handle the conversion you deflect and attempt to insult others

@zonavar68

Why do all the liberals who are clueless have to attempt insulting others ?
Go get educated

I'd have to disagree on that
There are politicians here blocking legislation that would allow women to carry pepper spray.. self defence is frowned upon in Oz 🇦🇺

@zonavar68 I also think women shouldn’t be walking the streets alone.. at night even.

Just because you can, dont mean you should..
shit, even I carry a stick with me in that situation

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout That's a fair call.

We have people now who have survived their second mass shooting attack.

Is anyone following this post from Great Britain? The reason I ask is that there was a a time when handguns and automatic weapons were prohibited (only long guns were allowed). Is that law still in effect?
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout In an ideal world, guns wouldn't even need to exist. Just my view. But humans like to kill things (inc each other) using violence.
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout I thought so. So, without 'personal protection' everyone in the UK walks or drives around still worrying about their safety even though they DON'T have a handgun to pull out and shoot the guy who insults them or pisses them off while driving??? THAT MUST MAKE YOU FEEL TERRIBLY UNMANLY!!
JollyRoger · 70-79, M
@zonavar68 I completely understand the logic that people need to kill other people: When you are at the top of the 'food chain' and have superior intelligence to every other living thing, then it fits that you should keep the numbers of people around you in check or you might slip into second place. We all know that survival means being "number one" and that all LIBS (as the 'number ones' call us) are a threat to their supremacy. No need for feedback on this....we know we need to get an education. @pdockal already said that,
Better to have one and not need it.
Than to need one and not have it..

In the current climate.

10-20 police response time. As it is. Your obligation is to hope you arnt beaten, raped.. or murder too severely before the cops get to the scene…

May the gods be in your favour 🇦🇺

Can you get a license for a rifle in order to hunt?
zonavar68 · 56-60, M
@RosaMarie If you can demonstrate a legitimate reason to obtain a license for the particular type of weapon you want, pass all the police and crim int checks, and meet all the other rules, probably. If you live in a suburban area, the police would most likely refuse the application simple because you don't live in a rural area where hunting could be something legitimate. Note that 'hunting' in Australia is nothing like 'hunting' in North America (USA + Canada).

Each state's rules are different. From the NSW form:

"When you apply for a NSW firearms licence you must provide evidence of your genuine reason for the possession and use of firearms.

The protection of yourself or another person is not considered a genuine reason.

You can have more than one genuine reason on your firearms licence."

https://www.service.nsw.gov.au/transaction/apply-for-a-firearms-licence-individual
The US has shrill crazies who cannot read the Constitution or the laws.

We have too many guns and too many untrained owners.
