Now is the time everyone needs to start obeying the law and respecting our fellow man
Overly · 41-45, M
@MarineBob Meaning the GOP should stop sabotaging the laws we have in exchange for NRA contributions.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
@Overly regardless of political affiliation they need to stop adding/ amending laws and fully enforce the one we have
Overly · 41-45, M
@MarineBob The laws we have are purposefully sabotaged to build a narrative that "laws don't work!". Which is a potential problem on a huge scale, because a lot of people are raised to believe just that. The laws we have now need modern improvements, streamlining and support on a state and federal level so that they can be enforced properly. THEN we can see how things improve or not, and make informed decisions of revising/omitting/adding or whatever laws to the mix. But, sadly, the current system is held back by those who profit from gun sales.

@SimplyTracie The NRA guy lives across the street from the church.
The NRA guy's kid (or someone) ran up to his door yelling that someone was shooting people in the church, across the street.
The NRA guy grabbed his rifle and headed to stop the perp.
The perp saw the NRA guy with his rifle and shot at him, two misses.
For the rest of the story, see above, I'm tired of typing.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SWisGoingWoke Thank you for explaining. I appreciate it.

I can’t agree to have more guns in the street. I joke about the second amendment but I think less guns the better
@SimplyTracie Not one person was ever harmed by a gun. A gun, like an atomic bomb, is an inanimate object. It requires the hands of a person who is either stupid or with evil-intent to use the object for harm.
Outlaw guns and you'll create a society of sheep who can be controlled by the government's whims. (See Venezuela)
Haven't you heard, it's absolutely not related to the numbers of firearms out there. In fact we need more for people to protect themselves. Hmm. 🤔

SW-User
@SapphicHeart Just wait till an NRA guy pops up with an other graphic, they can do magic with stats 😂
@SW-User
They sure can. 🙄
UserNameSW · 46-50, M
@SapphicHeart That looks racist. Only green and red people use guns?
AndrewG · 22-25, M
lets hear your theory on how to control them. Seems Chicago enacted the most strict gun laws in the nation. Would you like to guess where Chicago ranks in gun deaths. You can enact all the laws you want but until they can control the people using them bad things will happen. I get it every time one of these shootings happen out comes the how do we controls guns.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@OKWTF2 You didn’t say suspect. I made that up for lack of a better term. The person needs to be found guilty though before he is executed by a gunman, that’s all I meant.

Like Trump complimented the law in the Philippines where anyone can shoot and kill a dope dealer is just wrong.
OKWTF2 · 51-55, M
@SimplyTracie I think we are more in agreement on this than truly different in the most important aspects. The problem is, when regarding a weapon like a gun, being "close" is still permanent and tragic.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@OKWTF2 Well I’m glad.
Sure...let's start with the discussion of actually enforcing the laws already in place. There are roughly 20,000 gun laws already on the books at the federal, state and local level. Those with felonies, certain misdemeanors, domestic abusers, etc. are prohibited from buying or owning a firearm. We know the Air Force failed to update the FBI in this case, otherwise the background check process would have prevented the sale.

It's a felony to lie when filling out Firearm Transaction Record form 4473 when purchasing a gun. In 2010 alone, 48,000 felons lied about their criminal record on that form, yet only 44 were prosecuted. Joe Biden said there weren't enough human resources to do the work. Complete BS of course. There simply is no desire to keep perpetual criminals locked up.

In Washington state where I live, they are proposing legislation to go after domestic abusers and those who have restraining orders to confiscate their firearms. It's reported that less than half of them surrendered their guns when ordered by the courts.

And then there is the Grassley-Cruz legislation proposed back in 2013 to aggressively target felons and violent criminals from getting guns...but was filibustered by democrats.

Bottom line...the purpose of gun control laws should be to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, but they don't work, now do they?

In fact, gun control laws have the opposite effect. The state's with the toughest gun laws often times also have very high crime rates. There is no correlation between the gun laws and gun crime. There is a very strong correlation between gun laws and gun ownership. The states with the toughest gun laws have the lowest legal gun ownership.

This is the exact opposite effect that gun laws should have...unless the real objective is to disarm law abiding citizens while criminals keep their guns.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@BizSuitStacy Any discussion should be welcomed. Anytime. Anyplace.

It seems hopeless but keeping quiet because gun laws don’t keep guns away from criminals is not the answer. I wish I had a clue. I just don’t like seeing innocent people being slayed.
@SimplyTracie I don't want to see innocent people injured or killed. And I'm not suggesting that keeping quiet is the answer either. But I also know gun control laws aren't effective at stopping violence.

Part of the problem is we aren't thinking outside the box. The argument always seems to boil down to drawing a line in the sand...one side for gun control, the other side against it.

I believe we need to address the social issue of all violence...whether the tool of choice is a knife, a club, someone's hands, a gun or whatever. Violence is highly concentrated within America's inner cities, where gangs and drugs are prevalent.

The mass shootings seem to follow an ugly pattern. People with mental health issues or issues with violence that fall through the cracks. A number of these killers had a history that people ignored.
Overly · 41-45, M
By walking into a store and filling out the paperwork to get a gun. The GOP (as NRA paid politicians) purposefully sabotage the gun laws we have now so that various checks against stuff like this that should be digital and national are on PAPER instead. If the checks we have in place are not allowed to work, and that is used as some bullshit example of "see, gun laws DON'T WORK!" that is purposeful sabotage, and repeated complacency in the murder of Americans. So yeah, we can go all day about how this law or that law didn't do anything when GOP lawmakers purposefully sabotage the laws, but let's start with that accepted FACT, before we go into a larger conversation. As long as the GOP or any party funded by the NRA exists, gun laws will not be allowed to do their job. The gun manufacturers simply care about profit, and don't care how many American men, women or children are murdered to allow them to maximize those profits.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@Overly Sad. Maybe one day their child will be shot. (I’m not wishing that)
BigHeadScience · 41-45, F
The Texas shooter was dishonorably discharged. It was already illegal for him to have that firearm. So how'd he get it? Hmm...

@Wizard
And also a domestic assault conviction. Totally illegal for him to have an assault weapon.

@BigHeadScience Texas has lotsa guns. Maybe too many
Everyday should be the time to talk about gun crime in the US with a gun related homicide every 40 minutes.

But it won't happen and if I say anything I'd get called a moron or told to worry about my own country.

Nothing changed after Sandy Hook or Orlando why will it change after LV and Texas.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@InOtterWords You’re right and it’s sad 😞.

We’re morons and those killing people are sane.
SW-User
No, the time to talk about it has passed years ago. Now is the time to make some changes.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@SW-User That’s right. Time to put these criminals in jail
Yes!
Gun control is essential to hitting the target. You must squeeze the trigger, not pull it. And it helps, I think, to exhale first, then fire. Most important, do not point the gun at anything you do not intend to kill.
Gun control is important to all of us!
Pfuzylogic · M
Someday the NRA will lose this stranglehold. Until then the horrors will continue.
Overly · 41-45, M
@Pfuzylogic Big tobacco was considered too big to fight once before, and we're actually making headway in making sure people are exposed to less second hand smoke. The idea that the NRA and gun manufacturers are too big to fight is exactly how they want us to feel, so we just gotta keep believing, keep fighting.
Pfuzylogic · M
@Overly
I totally agree however they have so much of Congress in their pocket.
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
People have talked about it for a long time
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@SimplyTracie not that but people have talked gun control for as long as I've been alive
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@vetguy1991 We gotta live with whatever the current laws are in your state. The ATF or whoever got to do their jobs
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
@SimplyTracie that's true we have many laws just need enforcement

People have and will always die. People will always kill people. The disease of our society isnt firearms, it is the rampant ignorance, lack of empathy, and a disconnect with one's place within society.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@worldhat Is that the symptom or the problem?
worldhat · 31-35, M
Having the stomach flu is the disease, feeling nauseated is the symptom.
MartinII · 70-79, M
I think the heat of the moment is probably the wrong time. I’m all in favour of gun control, but it won’t prevent all outrages of the kind that has just happened, as we in the UK know. And any change in the US will, for better or worse, take an awful long time.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@SimplyTracie It’s not much to do with the President is it? As I understand it, it’s a matter for state law, subject to the Constitution and how the Supreme Court interprets that.
SimplyTracie · 26-30, F
@MartinII No it’s not up to the president but he sticks his nose into everything else. This is important.
