For examples of 'creeping communism' one need only cite the current administration taking significant equity positions in several large american corporations.

Apparently the failed President desperately shouting 'communism!' is perfectly happy to pursue public ownership of previously private businesses
@newjaninev2 At this rate they will be on par with Canada in about half a century. 😂
@newjaninev2 Of course. I am a socialist. I don't support feudalism with extra steps.

There is a factual basis for parts of what you’ve read about Zohran Mamdani, but the claim of a deliberate campaign to bankrupt landlords goes beyond what the evidence establishes.

His administration has explicitly supported:

Tenant organizing and stronger complaints enforcement. Mamdani has also proposed expanding the types of housing violations that justify rent strikes.

Transferring chronically neglected buildings to different owners, including nonprofits, community land trusts, or tenants themselves. These are stated objectives of his “Fix the City” initiative.

And there is a broader ownership agenda: his tenant-protection director, Cea Weaver, has advocated city purchases of rent-stabilized buildings and a growing publicly owned housing portfolio. So the concern about movement toward public ownership is not invented.

What I could not verify is an official instruction to manufacture complaints or indiscriminately stop paying rent in order to bankrupt otherwise responsible landlords. A recent New York Post opinion piece presents essentially the sequence you describe, but its claim of deliberate bankruptcy engineering is an interpretation of the administration’s motives.

Also, a management takeover and an ownership transfer are different things. Under the existing Article 7A program, a court can appoint an administrator to collect rents and repair dangerous conditions in a privately owned building. That does not itself make the city the owner.

Could aggressive enforcement combined with lost rental income push financially vulnerable landlords toward insolvency? Yes, that is a plausible economic risk. Whether that happens, and whether it is an intended outcome, are separate questions.

“First wave of communism” is therefore too strong a conclusion. An effort to expand public and nonprofit ownership of rental housing is a more precise description. The crucial issue is whether enforcement remedies documented neglect through fair procedures—or is used to make responsible private ownership financially untenable. The policies warrant scrutiny; the latter accusation still requires evidence.
@sunsporter1649 Oh, so you wanna go off topic, do ya???

I've seen government run housing. Its beautful. the best. 😃

@BohoBabe Looking forward to Mamdani expropriating my landlord and giving me a ballroom 🪩🕺🏻
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@ReptilianFromPlanetCrush It supplies a demand and basic human need where the private sector has failed . . . and it does this largely without the advantage of profit and capital gain. If you think you can do better, fill your boots!
carpediem · M
@ReptilianFromPlanetCrush Government housing has failed everywhere it has been tried in the US. People who pretend that isn't so are simply fooling themselves. The private sector has been very successful providing housing. It's the government that screws everything up with a variety of stupid initiatives too numerous to list. But we can start with open borders and the impact on supply and demand.

Next stop. Fix the bankruptcy laws so that rich people cant walk away leaving everyone else broke and stay rich themselves. (Yes. I do have someone in mind.)😷

its a lydian era bridge 2500yr. built as an aqueduct then used as bridge. later they added those metal fences so yea

I've heard Mamdani would cause the apocalypse since before he was elected and thus far I have seen only improvements to the life of NYCers
HikingMan · 56-60, M
@Elessar I know multiple people that live there and are directly benefiting already from his stewardship.

Fact

@Elessar I think you missed the point, that for Republicans, things improving for the ordinary working folk IS the Apocalypse,,😷

No, the landlords need to learn to not be so greedy.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Best way to avoid tenants complaining is to maintain your property well and provide a decent level of service for the eyewateringly high rent.
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl Mandamis people are telling tenants to complain about everything from dim lights to noise. Do you want to bet that Mandami is doing this in order to take over properties?
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Greenthumb No, I think his administration's stated objective is far more plausible. The balance of power in high rent locations such as New York is overwhelmingly in favour of the landlord. Mamdani has a democratic mandate to support tenants' rights and he is doing that. If a landlord cannot afford to maintain a rental property to a minimum standard, they should not be in the business. They are benefiting no one.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
If they can't afford to maintain their properties, maybe they should sell to someone who isn't that broke or greedy.
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@Crazywaterspring who would be foolish enough to buy them?
Rolexeo · 31-35, M
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@Rolexeo Yes, government run housing will be much better.👍
TexChik · F
I don't think the fed will allow that. He is getting serious push back from the people. The Governor is wearing Hijab and releasing violent felons from prison...Guess she is going scorched earth.

Mandami's city can't take over anything, they are broke because they ran out of other people's money and chased out billions from the City and State...
@TexChik 💯
@Greenthumb says
The proof is in the Nordic countries.
And yet you object to Mamdani pushing NYC towards the Nordic model???

The Nordic countries label their system "Social Democracy." Governments, funded via taxation, provide extensive public services, including universal healthcare, free or low-cost higher education, and robust social safety nets for all citizens.

Nordic transportation infrastructure operates on a hybrid model: the government plans, regulates, and funds the network, while private or state-owned corporate operators actually run the vehicles. This includes roads, passenger & car ferries, buses, city trams, & subways.

Moving on to housing, Sweden has collective bargaining based rent control, Norway has rents linked to a consumer price index, Finland has a state subsidized housing sector, and Denmark has older property rents priced based on building cost/utility.

You call the Nordic model capitalism . Personally, having recently returned from a vacation in Norway where we took advantage of all those transportation options (plus a robust EV charging network for our rental car) I can see many advantages to it. You call it capitalism, but whenever people propose introducing some of these policies in the US, right-wingers call it "socialism."

sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@ElwoodBlues To level the playing field why not waive the rent and property taxes on the small business owners?

Why are the Socialists anti capitalism? Do they think they can have Socialist programs without Capitalism?

Yes. I'm not 100% anti-capitalism, I think small businesses can be privately owned. But essential services should absolutely be nationalized, and corporations shouldn't get subsidies unless they're a co-op. None of that requires Capitalism.

@Frostcloud uh oh someone's upset i spelled his name correctly
DogMan · 61-69, M
From the DSA website.

Capitalism is a system designed by the owning class to exploit the rest of us for their own profit. We must replace it with democratic socialism, a system where ordinary people have a real voice in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and society.

Who is dumb enough to believe Socialism can survive without Capitalism?

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Ain’t no millionaires or celebrities selling off their second and third homes that they own in NYC. Not a single one.

Maybe a few are changing their desired residency status but none of them are giving up what they got there….

That’s just a delusional take that totally discounts reality.
Waveney · M
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout Celebrities are fleeing is bullshit unless you can actually name them and provide evidence. Screaming “GTFO” doesn’t turn your made-up claim into a fact. It just shows you’ve run out of arguments.

Not that you ever have any evidence to back up anything you're saying 😂🕺🏻

hunkalove · 70-79, M
It will force them to sell the properties. Hopefully the next owners won't be so greedy.
HikingMan · 56-60, M
@hunkalove They’re not selling anything. They just tie shit up in courts as they reap the rent.

This is something that he sees and knows, which is why he’s advocating for tenants to use escrow accounts. He hasn’t actually told anyone to just stop paying rent.

He wants tenants to withhold the rent in a legal manner that will force these corporate entities into the overdue maintenance.

It’s all legalese that normal people are unaware of and that these corporate entities use daily to fuck people over.
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@HikingMan correct, the city will force them into receivership.
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@hunkalove The next owner will be the city. Wait and see. This is what anti capitalists do. It will be a uptopia, right?
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
There are two types of Socialists. The rich virtue signaling nepo babies and entertainers that feel guilty for being rich but will not give up any wealth. And the people that cannot make it on their own, because they do not want to do what it takes to be successful.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl You said you achieved the "American Dream" with no help from family or government. I am therefore imagining that you are an ascetic hermit.

Taxation is not a simple consumer exchange. It is social insurance that we subscribe to do that important but "unprofitable" stuff (like childhood literacy and road maintenance) actually gets done rather than just talked about in company brochures.

Also, did you really start full-time work at the age of 6?
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@SunshineGirl I started working at the age of 11 in 1970. Why would you believe successful people are hermits?

MethDozer · M
@Greenthumb you dont need to know them personaly. Or at all to answer the question.
MethDozer · M
@Greenthumb I don't agree with you're " the sky is falling" accusation over a mayor encouraging the little people to flex their muscle against rent seekers bleeding them dry.

@HikingMan you sound like you are pro censorship. You will be a good socialist.
RachelLia2003 · 22-25, F
@HikingMan hello commonist. im not him and hes not me. so stop BULLYING
Waveney · M
That’s also a conspiracy theory dressed up as fact.

Mamdani is encouraging tenants to report genuine housing violations and organise, not telling them to invent complaints and bankrupt landlords.

There’s no evidence of a secret plan to force landlords into bankruptcy so the city can grab their properties.
Waveney · M
@Greenthumb “Give it a year or two” is just another way of saying you have no evidence.

And your personal "insults" are irrelevant: if your argument depends on predicting a future conspiracy instead of showing evidence for it now, calling me an “anti-capitalist” doesn’t magically make it true.

Sorry that NYC seems to be working for the majority ;)
Greenthumb · 56-60, M
@Waveney it always starts off wonderful. Study Venezuela.
Waveney · M
@Greenthumb You truly have nothing, do you.

Study Venezuela” isn’t evidence that NYC is going to become Venezuela. NYC isn’t a socialist state, and pointing at Venezuela doesn’t prove your claim about Mamdani, especially when you still haven’t produced a single piece of evidence for the conspiracy you started with.

@newjaninev2 yes under socialism the politicians and their friends will be rich. Most will be lower middle class, but they will have their needs met by the government. But don't worry the powerful will always be nice and do the right thing. There will be no corruption, or misappropriation of tax dollars. It will all be for the people. 😉
