Why shouldn’t the USSR be denounced on the grounds of being a dictatorship?

Any government that throws people in jail for verbally disagreeing with the government is clearly too fragile of a group to represent a world power.

I mean, it should insofar as it's relevant. Obviously, it's less relevant now that it's dissolved and stuff.
**Sigh** You do know that the USSR was disbanded on 31st December 1991, right???

This isn't the 1950's anymore, Dorothy...

No longer USSR. Called now the Russian federation.

As to your argument are you willing to take on half the world all at once? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Your forgetting that world power also includes The People's Republic of China.

@jshm2 the USA has shown little regard for hypocrisy in the past, why that stop us now?
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
It kinda is but it isn't going to have any impact as diplomatic pressure doesn't work on dictators.
1490wayb · 56-60, M
and what would this accomplish?? call it anything you want and nothing will improve
That’s what happens when power falls into the wrong hands.

Sounds fine. Today's dictatorship notwithstanding.

Your point being… ??
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
1) the USSR doesn't exist anymore
2) we're presently sanctioning them for invading another nation, we've previously sanctioned them for annexing party of said country, and they've been denounced a few times for poisoning and assassinating journalists.

I'm not sure they'll really care at this point.

@ViciDraco I feel like at this point, we should be painting the word "SANCTION" on a batch of stinger missiles.

@Stereoguy No, that's not correct. The US government did NOT label the Loudon County parents domestic terrorists. That was done by individuals on the school board. The man arrested was accused of ordinary crimes: disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

It wasn't even supported by the Oregon School Boards Association:
"There has been some damage done,” said Jim Green, executive director of the Oregon School Boards Association. Oregon did not terminate its membership but also distanced itself from the letter. “Do we support NSBA’s take as labeling parents as domestic terrorists? We do not.” (Washington Post, January 13, 2022).

You can't denounce an entire country for everything anyone within it says. The topic here relates to the formal Russian government.
