Low taxation, a spendthrift military, borrowing money for all of the foreign wars we've been engaged in, inflation in prices of goods and services here at home, and a culture of threatening to cut budgets of departments that don't spend their entire budget instead of rewarding them for being good fiscal stewards.
As far as the various government programs, we just don't do them very well. Other nations provide much better quality at far lower cost. So it's not that we have too many programs. We just suck at running them.

Living within 20 miles of the Canada/US border all my life, but 20 miles north of the border.. 🇨🇦 ..the one common song that Americans would always sing to me is how little they are taxed compared to how high Canadians are taxed.
You're quite right when you say that low taxation is at the heart of America's national debt (among other things like unbridled military spending). What I've learned along the way from living in offshore countries which do not tax their citizens at all (zero income tax), is that they don't have anything of substance either.
They don't have decent roads, they don't have emergency 911 service on their cellphones, they don't have decent electrical grids and they have non-existent government and medical services for the citizens of those offshore countries.
Low taxation equals very low standard of living in all cases, the US being no exception... and that's the trap the US government fell into 60+ years ago when they decided that the rest of the world would pick up the tab for America's excesses so that Americans could enjoy the best standard of living in the world.
The only thing is, Americans could only achieve this objective off the backs of every other Nation who had financial dealings with the US.
We all know how that's working out for the US government's master plan now, don't we! 🤣

answer the most basic questions. One girl thought the available credit on the card her parents paid for
was an actual credit due to her for spending so much. She thought that running up her card gave her
free money.

@DogMan That’s a pretty misleading way to describe it. The U.S. has funded foreign-aid programs that include things like gender equality, anti-discrimination, disability inclusion, and women’s economic participation, but that is not the same thing as spending “hundreds of millions teaching 3rd-world countries DEI.”
You’re taking a broad category of development and foreign-aid programs and relabeling all of it as “DEI.” If you have a source showing that hundreds of millions specifically went toward DEI training in foreign countries, show me the actual budget line. Otherwise, that’s a pretty deceptive characterization of what the money was funding.
Furthermore, we elected ourselves as world leaders bevause we specfically take in regugees and immigrants, all of this is part of diplomacy.
Not that we've done good things or that the United states hasn't abused their position of power but you can't be a world leader and yet not lead. You want to be isolationist and a world leader but you can't have both you have to sacrifice one or the other.
In fact doge got rid of programs in unicef that prevented diseases in other countries from spreading through research. It was honestly cheaper, now to fight those same diseases is more expensive because we have no way of stopping it.
You can't be both, you are just not fit to be a leader I guess.
