Hands up who knows why Tesla's European sales have crashed

I think that the reaction of people boycotting Tesla, equating the product with the chief executive of the company, is disturbing and really no better than the people being protested against.

Musk is one man, but Tesla employs many thousands of people in a number of countries around the world. A boycott of Tesla will have zero effect on Musk's behaviour. The only people who might suffer are those who make the vehicles.

Mind you, I do appreciate the joke.
@ninalanyon So you oppose all boycotts?

Assuming the overall demand for EVs is the same, sales of other EVs will go up and the Tesla workers will shift to those companies.

@ninalanyon There are conscious boycotts and there are irresistible consumer trends. In the 1980s, Gerald Ratner destroyed his own chain of jewellery shops through one injudicious media interview that was hugely disrespectful to his customers. I rather feel Tesla fits into the second category, and as we know the customer is always right 🙂

@ninalanyon taxpayers subsidized him and can only boycott to show disapproval.

@barney1 Which was a factually correct statement. The problem being that he took his customers and their demand for his wares for granted. Big mistake.

@LeopoldBloom I'm not opposing people's freedom to buy or not buy whatever they choose. I'm opposing the reasoning, people want to harm Musk but a boycott of Tesla harms only Tesla employees. It would have made a lot more sense to boycott VW after the diesel emissions scandal, after all a lot more people were complicit in that not just the CEO.

@Kypro The taxpayer subsidizes lots of companies. Are you implying that subsidies are invariably worthy of a boycott? If so then you won't have much left to buy.

If this chart is correct Tesla isn't even in the top ten US companies by subsidy amount:

Amazon has been boycotted Too for giving money to maga

@LeopoldBloom
... the Tesla workers will shift to those companies.

Not necessarily unless those rivals' factories are in the same country, or indeed even the same city. Moving to another employer is far more than just walking through different gates and changing your wages' bank-transfer name.

@barney1 Making his comment even worse, he was referring to just one item! I forget what it was, but it was not the full range.
trollslayer · 46-50, M
@SunshineGirl the tesla workers can stand in the unemployment line with the federal workers musk fired for no reason
Convivial · 26-30, F
@ninalanyon I might disagree...
@ninalanyon As long as the demand for EVs is stable, if Tesla customers move to other EV manufacturers, any surplus Tesla employees will do the same as the other manufacturers will need them.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@LeopoldBloom It is still a major disruption to the life of the employee and their family and would necessitate moving to another city or possibly another country. And all the while Musk will continue in his madness undeterred.
Kypro · 51-55, M
@ninalanyon he won’t have as much money
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Kypro He will still be almost the richest person on the planet if you halve his wealth. And destroying Tesla utterly would not even do that.

@Kypro Good. Just don't kid yourself that it will have any effect on Musk.
Kypro · 51-55, M
@ninalanyon why is he whining about it then?
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Kypro Probably because no one like having less money. That doesn't mean that his behaviour will be altered for the better by it.
Kypro · 51-55, M
@ninalanyon yeah I don’t like having my ss stolen
