It’s unlikely, to put it mildly, that the huge work of building the technology for the Digital Pound on which the Bank of England has embarked will be rejected by HM Treasury when it’s completed. How, then, are they going to implement it against the expected resistance? It’s not impossible that reception of UBI will eventually be made conditional on accepting a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip implanted under the skin that would not only allow us to receive and make payments, but also for the state to track our movements and monitor and limit those payments. I can understand an international arrangement to facilitate normal bank transfers from country to country; which in a practical sense are largely digital now anyway.

However, such a scheme might be advantageous if it removes using any single nation's currency (such as the US Dollar, the Euro, Pound or Yen) as the reference level; but also, hopefully, if it can be used to end the currently unofficial, unregulated, insecure, fraud-ridden world of so-called Cryptocurrency. If so, that would not be before time.

Already the banks are becoming very wary of customers transferring money to or from schemes like Bitcoin; placing transaction limits or even preventing them, before yet more become victims of the shady "cryptocurrency" entities.

That caution by banks, and perhaps the cryptocurrency "traders" themselves, might be the source of the scares about governments wanting to control personal finances (beyond national taxes and benefits, of course).

No thanks. It was a bad idea to let private companies control the production and supply of money to begin with. Switch from fiat to digital and the central banks will control who has it, who can and cannot spend it. When it can be spent and on what goods.
