That's because the James Carville types are economically right-wingers.
The modern "socialist" movement is much closer to New Deal democratic politics. They are not taking over the party, they are reclaiming from the Republican-lite wing that took over in the Clinton era.

I guess as a moderate - I'm more like old school - which Carville is quirky but not insane.

Probably more Carville, but then again I considered myself GOP leaning before W Bush, and have maybe voted one Republican in any race since the the GOP got teabagged back in 2010.
