As a politician wouldnt you want less people to vote?

Depends on the politician's position. Is he incumbent? Then yes, the fewer people who vote, the better for him. Is he a challenger, or part of a crowd of contenders? Then he wants as many people to vote as possible, either for him or for multiple candidates running ahead of him to split the vote, mostly likely in a primary.

As a Republican politician, I would. Specifically, I would want fewer poor people to vote, because we know what's going on.
